The Price of Everything – Video Book Review

My friend, Daniel Decker, sent me the book, The Price of Everything: Solving the Mystery of Why We Pay What We Do (amazon affiliate link), because he thought I might like it. He was wrong. I loved it. Why? Because it’s the kind of book that gives you a lot of insight into how to understand pricing things. I found it quite interesting and it’ll definitely help you, should you want to understand a bit more than math on how to price things. I shot a quick video review:

If you can’t see the video, click here. That’s my review. Daniel also sent another video:

I had watched the promo video on this book and was impressed. Love the review and wanted to enter to win a copy but alas I am unfortunate enough to live in Australia and thus not eligible. Unfortunate that I can’t enter, but live in the coolest place in the world – IMHO. :) Will add book to my “Books to buy” list, thanks Chris!

Thanks Alycia. Sorry about that on the shipping deal but it’s well worth the $15 or so from Amazon. If you click my name and swing over to my blog you can see a post on the book. Within it you can download the intro chapter if you’d like. That will get you started. :) Hope you like it, it’s pretty insightful!

Chris -With every book review you do I cry with a little more happiness as I know mine has to be moving up your giant pile ;)

Thanks Chris. I knew you’d like it but am even happier that you loved it. :)

I found it quite impressive. Not just about PRICE in the sense of how much we pay (monetarily) for an iPad or pants but PRICE as far as the cost for each decision that we make (or don’t make). PRICE is about choice, priorities, and the value or worth that we set. That value drives our decisions and shapes our lives in more ways than we might initially think.

I also liked some of the chapters from the book too…

The Price of Happiness. The Price of Life. The Price of Work. The Price of Faith. The Price of Free. Or even The Price of the Future.

If others are reading this comment I’d love to get your thoughts on PRICE too. Could create a mini dialogue in the comments here.

Chris – Thanks for pointing out more material you think is worth my time. The Kindle I got makes it even nicer: I can download the sample from the office and try the book out at home, no time cost.

I have found your recommendations so far to be helpful, although I don’t always buy.

Really excited about this one, and the videos were great. (Kids are having a rock band concert now as they heard the music play from the second one!)

I think about price often in terms of garbage. What are we generating as a family and what will that cost us in the long term. What price will our children pay for our misuse of resources. Interested in reading more on that.

Recently I have been giving much thought to the price of free, in terms of energy and waste. Every time a “free magazine” shows up or a goodie bag from a party or conference comes home, the price in my energy goes up. Each time I download a free pdf from someone’s site I feel the cost of my energy, sometimes positive, other times not so much.

Intrigued to read the price of happiness…

Wow! This book sounds so good. The subject of pricing and how to price items is such a mystery to people. I’ll definitely be putting this title on my book list. Thanks Chris!

    Chris,

I checked this book out at B&N based on your review. It’s now on my list.

How about this for pricing: the Getty museum in L.A. is free. You just have to pay $15 for parking. It’s soooooo much cooler to pay $15 for parking to go to a “free” museum, than it is to pay $5 per person for 3 people. Sneaky, effective, and refreshing.

    Chris,
This is thought provoking. I was expecting a business typical business book, but this really speaks to the new normal in business – the concept of significance and accountability in our business choices and the bigger picture. Cool.

It sounds like an interesting read. The short video was really cool, and the form for the free give away is a great idea. I did not realize I missed the deadline until I was half way through filling it out. Your reviews are well done Chris.
