Think Big Manifesto – video book review

Listen up, Michael Port: I’m talking to YOU. You might think Book Yourself Solid is your best book, but I might have to disagree. Now that I’ve read The Think Big Manifesto, I think your passions really match this project a lot better. As I say in my review, I think this is your Tom Peters after-In-Search-of-Excellence book (you know, where he gets all !!!!exclamationpointy!!!). This, Michael, is a good thing. Here’s more:

Maybe I'm alone here, but I couldn't get into this book. I got the same RAH, RAH, RAH feeling you got and the desire to break down brick walls with my bare hands, but I got that by page five. It just never really went anywhere else for me…

I am reading this on the back of 4 Hour Work Week (yes, I know I am the last person to read that) and I just appreciated the fact that it had these broad motivational ideas coupled with detailed action steps.

Bottom line on the manifesto, I felt like a coach got me all pumped up for the game, but never took the time to review the playbook with me (and possibly never really had one)…

You're right. I do 3 or 4 books at a time and get through them in about a week, depending on my flying schedule.

I just finished a Big Thinking meeting in a coffee shop in Michael Ports town. I was pushing his book on the guy I was talking to and get this, I look at the table next to me and there is someone reading a copy of Book Yourself solid. Thinking Big is contagious, I can't get away from it. The Think Big Manifesto is a GREAT book and a quick read.

Thank you so much for reading The Think Big Manifesto. I’m psyched to hear it got you ready for the game. That’s it. That’s exactly why I wrote it. To get you ready for the game. To get you to where you are at right now. I believe it would be inappropriate for me to offer a Think Big playbook that tells you how to live your life.

The Manifesto’s job is to bring us together as big thinkers so we can be independently and collaboratively victorious. I believe the only person who can write our big thinking playbook is ourselves.

In the second half of the book I outline the code for big thinking. It’s not a blueprint or 3 easy steps. It is however, an organic code that unlocks the natural order of big thinking. When interviewing hundreds of big thinkers in preparation for the book, I found that they all applied this way of being to the different areas of their life. If you think it’s appropriate, you can use The Think Big Code of Conduct in the last half of the book as your playbook. But, I would never presume to tell you or anyone else how to play the game.

Here’s to your big thinking game, my friend.

Wasn't a big fan of 'Book Yourself Solid' either. Being from the UK, I'm naturally not as responsive to the overly-hyped approach taken by some of the books that come out of the US (what can I say, it's a cultural difference!) and to be honest my less than optimal experience with Book yourself solid has put me off buying this latest book.

That being said, I'm gonna go take another look at this now, thanks for the concise review Chris.

Chris, that was a good review. Your enthusiasm makes me want to order a copy on Amazon! I love the title of the book and also like the Manifesto. Would you recommend reading his other book that you said was okay or just go for this one? Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to write me Michael. I am definitely going to take a second look at the second half and reconsider the outline. I understand what you are saying with regard to a blueprint, but often times that is what is truly great about many business books. Might be personal preference, but I've always connected to someone sharing their personal blueprints and allowing the reader insight into their unique process. I dont think anyone truly walks away from any of these kinds of books and follows them note for note. I hope that most consider what they've seen and adapt what they believe will work for them.

I genuinely appreciate what you wrote, I just think I need to stop looking at it as a book and embrace it as exactly what you claim it is… a manifesto. Again, I really appreciate your response!

I wish I could finish all those books in the time you do. Dang! I have about 4 books waiting me to finish them. I get caught up on blog reading that I am barely reading email anymore let alone these books I need to read. I wrote it down though.
