Third Tribe is Live

third tribe I’m pretty excited that the Third Tribe Marketing project is now officially open for members. We did a soft launch a few days ago, and nothing big broke, so now we’re ready to talk about it. What’s it about? Here’s the story.

What Third Tribe is About

It all started because of something Seth Godin said to Brian Clark (copyblogger) about marketing. Brian had written about an internet marketer type (the yellow highlighter kind) and Seth had asked which side of that kind of marketing Brian was on, as if there were two tribes: touchy feely on one side and harsh yellow highlighter on the other. Brian’s response was that he was in neither camp, and that’s where the basic seed of “third tribe” came from.

We chatted about it on the phone, and then Brian checked in with Darren Rowse (problogger), and then we all conferred with Sonia Simone (remarkable communications), and the idea came about to offer a private membership forum and information/education place to share openly about internet marketing strategies, tactics, and ideas.

That’s basically what we talk about inside the third tribe site.

(Oh, for those of you who just want to know how much, we’re doing an introductory rate of $27 USD a month for charter members, which will be your price if you buy it before Friday, February 5th [around 6PM CT]. After that, it goes up to $47 USD a month.) Want some?

Not For Everyone

What we’re covering in there is basically the “how you can do better internet marketing” stuff. It’s not about affiliate marketing per se. It’s not about “make money online” stuff per se, though some of the third tribers talk about that. But it’s definitely a place to learn and talk about what we’ve figured out works in the internet marketing place.

Because of who’s there, there are all kinds of perspectives. Darren makes his money one way. Brian does it a totally different way. Me? I’m even more different than both of them, and so we’re also learning from each other through this sharing process.

It might not be for you, and that’s just fine.

Who Else is There?

We’ve already got some great folks you might know like John Jantsch, Leo Babauta, Pam Slim, Naomi Dunford, Johnny Truant, Chris Garrett, Dave Navarro, Jonathan Fields, Hugh MacLeod, Laura Roeder, Mark McGuinness, Chris Pearson, Aaron Wall, and there are more that I’m probably missing.

Again, this stuff’s about marketing and what’s worked for us and what hasn’t. It’s been fun hearing from people in the forums sections, and I’m learning every bit as much as I’m sharing. That’s what I’m enjoying the most so far: the interactions. Yeah, there’s all this educational content that’s hopefully useful, including audio programs, worksheets, things like that. But me personally? I’m really digging the interactions in the forums.

If This Sound Good to You

I’m pretty happy about this project. I like working with Brian and Darren and Sonia, and I’m loving what I’m learning from the other folks who’ve already started in on the forums. If you want to talk privately about internet marketing and what we’re finding that works and what doesn’t, then consider joining the Third Tribe. If not, don’t worry. I’m still doing my thing here at [chrisbrogan.com].

How This Fits With Everything Else I Do

I’m still happily the president of New Marketing Labs. I’m still writing here at [chrisbrogan.com]. I’m still doing the stuff I’m doing. This was just a way to offer some ideas, insights, and interaction with people who wanted to get deep into online marketing. And no, this isn’t the education project I talked about in my newsletter. That’s still forthcoming.

For the Naysayers

Any time I talk about money, I get a bunch of emails telling me that I’ve jumped the shark or that I’m a sellout. I did when we published Trust Agents. I did when I took my first affiliate ad for Thesis. I’ll just say my part about this up front, and you can blog whatever about it elsewhere.

The reason for building a membership forum site is that we can share information that we use for our businesses. It’s not what we want to post on our blogs. It’s something people are paying to learn and hopefully use for their own business efforts, and because of that, we think it’s of value. Don’t want it? Don’t buy it. I do plenty for free, and that’s still useful, too.

It’s not for everyone. It’s for those who want to step up their online marketing game.

Get On Board

The Third Tribe Marketing site is a paid membership site. If you sign up before February 5th at 6PM (Central Time – GMT -6), the cost is $27 USD a month. If you sign up next week, the cost jumps to $47 a month. The early bird and all that.

I hope you join. I’m really excited about what’s going on there. Frankly, I haven’t been active on any kind of message board/forum in a long while, and it was kind of fun to revisit the feeling of threaded forum conversations where everyone’s voice matters.

Check out Third Tribe Marketing.

I'm a happy member of The Third Tribe and am enjoying meeting many new people, and look forward to meeting the folks at upcoming conferences as well. TTT is a way for me to meet more people in my space, and learn a ton more.

As for selling out by making money via this effort or writing a book, I can't believe that people are actually telling you that. Or perhaps I can. Either way.

Good luck in your efforts. I look forward to seeing many Chris Brogan fans there.

The most fun will be hearing the stories about the people who bitch and complain about your project. I love the stories of the naysayers who take shots at people who are making real things happen. Reminds me not to spend my time tearing people down, but instead to be the guy who spends my time lifting people up! Keep me in mind when you have a really good “naysayer story” and need to vent to someone without blogging it… I will listen. Good luck on this project.

Should I say the best thing that has happened so far in 2010? Keep it up Chris!

I joined the Third Tribe community on Monday. It's been a terrific experience so far. The best part is an exclusive access to the bright minds of people who are not afraid to make money online while connecting to their audiences. You can pose your dilemmas and challenges on forums and people reach out to you. Check it out for yourself. Thanks Chris for being part of this.

Great idea. Anyone who has heard me talk (or dare I day, listened) in the past few months has heard me talk about two islands of people… the big island of the marketing/media world that has significant buying power and influence, and the smaller, growing island of social media influencers. There needs to be a bridge built between them. Eventually they will merge as the ideas of the smaller island become more common and understood and are absorbed into “traditional” marketing (pangaea). Your third tribers should help facilitate that happening.

Glad to see you living the gospel Chris. Velvet ropes and all. I think these walled communities will continue to emerge in new and interesting ways for several different niches. If this community at all reflects the panel you three (Brian, Darren, Chris) had in Vegas, I think it will be a success. A lot of people are out there hustling and read all three of you guys and really just want to get to the heart of how to be more successful online, how to make more money in these changing times. I dig the project.

Sidenote, cool to see you will be coming down to Charlotte in May. Too bad I move to NYC in April ; )

Chris, very exciting! I think $27/month (and even $47/month next week) is a great investment for membership to online thought leaders. I shared this with my Marketing counterpart, as I have been sharing your fab nuggets the past six months.

  • http://www.TheDADvocateProject.com metzgerbusiness

    Chris,

I'm a member of the Third Tribe and I like where it looks like it's going. I'm excited that you guys are offering it at such an increadible price. I think even the $47 price is pretty fair but the initial $27 price is awesome. Are there any plans to make it an affiliate program? After listening to Johnny's interview, it seem to make sense to offer it as an affiliate program.

The other piece of feeback I have is this. I didn't get much new out of Johnny's interview. It was stuff I kind of know already. The area I have a problem with is how I get peopel to click through. I wonder if it's the products I'm featuring or my approach. I'll start a forum discussion on it over there.

Feeling good things about Third Tribe I think Seths question was a good one. Knowing which side your on can help. The question will have stimulated a healthy after response from Brain.

  • http://twitter.com/RicNunez Ricardo Nunez

I'm a member of the Third Tribe, I'm pretty excited about it. Coming from you and everybody in your team, is easy to trust (trust agents definition?) that the material will be great. Like you said: “It’s for those who want to step up their online marketing game.” Have a good one Chris.

  • http://copyblogger.com/ Brian Clark

We hear you that. We needed something entry level enough to accommodate the people newest to online marketing. The seminar series that starts Monday is more advanced.

  • http://thedynamiclife.wordpress.com/ Hugh

I can't stand all the naysayers who gobble up all the free information and then scream “sellout” when a blogger decides to offer a subscription-based option. It's very hypocritical. This project sounds exciting and I hope to join, as long as I can free up the $. Cheers!

  • http://www.TheDADvocateProject.com metzgerbusiness

    Thanks Brian.

I just wanted to add that people are more committed to things that they pay for so a paid membership community makes people interact more and provide higher quality content. Money does talk :). Plus it makes people to feel oh, so special when they can rub shoulders with people who have proven themselves.

  • http://twitter.com/mckra1g mckra1g

Charging for a service imbues it with value. If one isn't willing to make the physical sacrifice of exchanging a recognized, universal symbol of “value” (ie. in this instance, money), then (s)he won't do the work equal to the value they've assigned the token of exchange.

I get really convoluted sometimes in my anal grammarian ways, but essentially, no one values anything for which they don't have to pay. Sometimes the price is intangible; sometimes it's something as replaceable as money.

I find that by joining this Tribe, I've said to myself, “Put up or shut up.” …I'm elevating my game by choosing to associate with those who've achieved something to which I aspire, and I must admit that I'm a bit freaked, but I'll never run with the big dogs if I don't get off the porch.

  • kboon

    Chris,
I think the idea is well over due. There are so many different approaches to offering products, services or advertising online. Twitter has be come overwhelming with the one page, yellow highlighter sites (as you call them). Today as I talk to entrepreneurs and business owners I want to show them solutions that they can apply to their business. I will definitely sign up!

    Cheers!
    Kevin

I joined yesterday, Chris, can't wait. I agree about forums – I used to love learning via “equal conversations” like that, and I miss them!

Looking forward to getting to know all the TTM'ers.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

Love it. Glad you're in, Annie. : )

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

Thrilled to hear it! Glad you're in, Kevin.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

You're already one of us, Molly. What's not to love?

But you're right: we add value by thinking of what it will cost us to be there.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

I'm glad you're there, Ricardo. We hope it works out.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

We'll definitely have more. To be honest, I'm not as into the interviews as I am the forums. I mean, it's all okay, and we'll share that kind of stuff, but to me, the meat's in the meetings.

  • http://www.patrickokeefe.com iFroggy

FORUMS?! What are they?! Haha. Congrats on this, everyone involved. Sounds like a great idea and a great concept.

I've been pondering something like this for online community management, promotion, marketing, etc. etc., since that's my area. I'm sure I'll learn from what you guys are doing here. :)

    Best of luck with it.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

  • http://www.TheDADvocateProject.com metzgerbusiness

Yeah, There are some great peopel over there. I spent some time in the forums this morning and was really impressed with the folks on th forums. There are a lot of good folks already doing good things and it hardely started yet.

  • http://www.kherize5.com Suzanne Vara

Congrats to you, Darren, Brian and Sonia as this has been in the works for a while. The forum itself is worth the membership. The diverse group of people in so many different industries is amazing. Reading their posts in the forum and learning so much about people I have seen around on Twitter has been so valuable already for building that army.

I am very much on board here as the Third Tribe is about what we can learn from all of you (mentioned above in your post) but also really what we can learn from each other and expand upon our own knowledge and community. The experiences we all have in our different industries and how they relate to one another, to having the opportunity to find resources from people who are there for the same reasons and not looking to sell ya or ride your coattails.

Thank you so much for dedicating so much of your time to this project. In the hustle and bustle of everyday we sometimes forget to take a minute and just drop a note to say thank you to our friends for giving so much of themselves and asking for nothing in return.

  • bencurnett

    It's not for me.

But that doesn't mean I would ever bag on someone involved. Sellout? That's ludicrous.

I'm a regular reader of the bloggers you mention, Chris (and you too). I'd imagine that for people ready to invest their money, and more importantly, their time in a tribe with a skill set like thirdtribe, they'd be hard pressed to ever find a better resource to belong to.

Best of luck with this, and thanks for leading.

Speaking of value, I now know what the definition of imbues is after having to look it up :)

  • http://website-in-a-weekend.net/ Dave Doolin

    I'm in.

    Like what I see already.

  • http://twitter.com/mckra1g mckra1g

Great post! Without getting too Dilbertian, there *is* a synergy when a community has a direct and unfiltered exchange/stream of ideas. The possibilities and outcomes are unpredictable and fun. I wrote a haiku about this one day, which may apply:

The dynamism / of like meeting like expands / both bodies in turn.

  • http://www.kherize5.com Suzanne Vara

I agree. There really is a synergy there and the unpredictable outcome is what makes it fun. So many times we spend hours and hours relating to people in our own field that we do not get to see what other people in other industries are doing. As a marketer, gaining insight on how people use the space is crucial to the learning process of social media; plus it is nice to branch out and meet new people who are a part of the same community. Your haiku does apply and very well done.

  • http://mandyboyle.com/ Mandy Boyle

I've got to save a few more pennies. Once I do, I'm signing up :)

  • pamelaslim

I am so excited about this project – I want to scream from the rooftops!

Sonia's “Which tribe are you?” post really got under my skin. I am so ready to learn a whole other side of marketing that pulls the best from both worlds.

And there is not one thing wrong with earning a living while sharing a ton. Thanks for participating, I look forward to joining!

  • http://armystrongmom.blogspot.com/ jilliansmitty

Hm, I'm torn. I read this post and went to the 'sales pitch' and it sounds like something I'd be into but then again it sounds like a sales pitch, too, so that automatically sent up flags. I want to trust it because I practically live on chrisbrogan.com and copyblogger. But then some how almost without even trying I'm reading a 3 page long criticism of TTT, and I think it just came out! I guess I need more convincing or need to give it time and hear what other people think once it gets going.

    Hi Chris
Is this only US based subscription? I'm in Sydney. Also is subscription month by month i.e. if the cashflow decreases can I drop out without exit fees?
    Thanks,

Um, looks like your theme is broken. The sidebars are way down at the bottom, at least in Firefox.

  • http://therexblog.com/ Rex Williams

    Chris,
I'm in and excited to participate, but can you explain your reasoning why you initially offered it only to your newsletter subscribers and gave a date of Feb 5th, then the next day (or two) opened it up to the world?

What was the rush? Even if you had a small group to start, wouldn't it have honored your true fans more by taking the time to build tighter relationships with the few? The feeling of being in on the ground level, an exclusive member, was huge, even though I thought you probably have thousands of newsletter subscribers. By opening it up so quickly you threw out that exclusive charter member feeling.

I know things happen fast on the internet, but I was kind of taking a day or so to think about it (even though I know $27 is a killer deal, and with the option to quit any time it's basically no risk.) I was just trying to consider if I had the time to get involved in another thing. I've noticed that my curiosity gets me into a lot of things lately.

So help me understand the reasoning. Maybe the stats would help. I'm curious to know how many people are in it now.

Anyway, what's done is done. Not that big of a deal really. I'm still looking forward to the experience and learning from the masters.

    Thanks for letting me in.

  • Zigbee

Are you on crack cocaine? I cant believe all the positive drivel in this “I love Brogan” comments website – sounds more like a money grab to me! Come on folks if you love it some much hand over your doe!

You can learn so much from this site – and its free or buy the book, but not 27/month going to 47 – thats way too much.

  • http://www.zoombits.co.uk/memory-cards/micro-sd/memory-2-go-4gb-micro-sdhc-class-4-memory-card/12314 best 4gb micro sd

You can't hire Chris Brogan for anywhere near $27 in real life, but you can ask him anything you want inside Third Tribe. Why should that be free? If corporations pay for Chris's advice, isn't it valuable? It sounds like this isn't right for you, and that's okay. But we deliver more education than your average ebook (plus a lot more) for less money, so I'm a bit puzzled why this is such a mysterious concept to you. In the real world of business, people pay to belong to trade associations. In other words, the online world is growing up (at least for some).
