Thoughtful Comment Spammers Welcome

Weird but true: someone added a spam comment to one of my blog posts. Here’s the pic:

The link in the user’s name takes you to a site to buy something. It’s common. We get this all the time, right?

Thing was, the comment was actually good. I decided to leave it up.

So, spammers of the world, maybe you’ve hit on a strategy that works. Maybe.

I'm good if the guy selling discount washers leaves a good comment. If he leaves 10 of the same comment. BZZZZT.

Labeling someone a spammer permanently is reserved for repeat spam offenders. Occasionally what we perceive as spam is someone actually trying to squeeze in some comment love.

I've edited out links before and left a comment.
It does happen that the someone leaves a legitimate comment but gives links in the comment. I often wonder if this is a default signature.

What is your opinion on business owners using shortened URLs when they leave a comment? Sometimes those come across as spam but in many cases they are just used for tracking.

I had one on my site too. It was a very nice compliment, though probably not genuine, but I left it. Guess if I had tons I would delete them just so my regular followers didn't end up bothered by them.

The only difference between the comments that would be approved vs. the ones that would not be would simply be the link, hence leading to the overall sentiment that most blog owners look at business links as spam, regardless of the quality of comment

This is a very interesting conversation which needs to be seriously considered. Useless spam comments are easy to identify and should be deleted. Intelligent spam comments are too frequently mixed up with legitimate comments that it is impossible to identify which is which. I am a e-commerce website owner and whenever i make a comment on what every kind of site i add my website in the url. I generally dont post spam and will always post legitimate comments only on topics that are of either personal or business interest to me. Why should they be deleted just because my occupation is a website owner…….at the very worst i increase your traffic and at the very best i add a thought provoking comment……..

I was searching for help in blocking those Air Jordan's spammers and found your post. I've been getting a few per day by those people. All different user names, but also IP addresses, which makes them hard to block. I think it's real people getting paid to leave comment spam. They don't put any red flag words in the comments so spam filters don't catch it. And while the comments themselves seem innocuous, sometimes flattering, it's clear they are copy/paste because they're very off-topic. Wish I could figure out how to ban them.

Personally I am more forgiving of keyword names if the comment is good. I don’t have an ethical problem with someone contributing to the conversation but at the same time helping themselves a bit.
