Three Inspirational Books

October 13, 2009 · Comments

I’ve reviewed 3 books today (1 was sent by the people for my review, 1 I bought the old fashioned way, and 1 was handed to me by the author at a conference), all of them very inspirational in tone. I found each interesting, but if you want the most USEFUL, it’s a toss-up.

I really like The Power of Giving: How Giving Back Enriches Us All (amazon links), from the perspective of how I could do something useful for the world, but then I like Little Shifts: You Can Create Change. With Every Single Choice. Every Day. All Day Long, as a good book on personal change and what matters about it. I found What I Know: Uncommon Wisdom and Universal Truths from 10-Year-Olds and 100-Year-Olds to be interesting and inspirational, but to be honest, I personally would read it once and then probably just buy it for graduates. The other two books I might go back to a few more times.

  • Very good video, Chris.
All of your video is really an amazing Chris, this video is really inspires me a lot.. I am thankful to you, you really post here such an interesting video as well as an information..
  • Super thankful for these kinds of reviews. These are 3 books that I havn't come across. Little shifts seems around the idea of the "Power of Small" - by the same people that wrote, the power of nice. I want to do some reviews like this now. Simple, short, to the point. I plan to pick up little things and the giving book once I finish a few i've got on the go.

  • Thanks for the book reviews Chris. To me it seems like The Power of Giving: How Giving Back Enriches Us All will be the most beneficial to me so I am going to pick it up and give it a look.

  • It was really meant to be for me to read this post. Based on a conversation I had last night, I promised to be more giving. Giving in a lot of different ways. I am almost done reading "The lost Symbol" by Dan Brown, and I looking into my next book to read.. I guess I just found it.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
  • Chris - You handle full discloser better than most people. I love what you do with your "about" page (it's inspired me to make sure all associations and connections are very clear), but I've always thought your Amazon affiliate discloser doesn't really seem like a discloser.

Writing "Amazon Links" after a link isn't very clear that you make a profit when someone buys one of these books through that link. I think this is just a case where you are using language that "outsiders" to this industry wouldn't know what that meant. It seems like an attempt at discloser, but not really true transparency as "Amazon Link" could easily just be interpreted as "here is where you can buy the book - it has nothing to do with me".

I only mention this because I think you are one of the leaders of this full transparency movement.
  • Chris is by far the most transparent /honest of the lot out there.

It takes time and effort to do what he does and IMHO it’s unfair to expect him write a paragraph or two next to every affiliate link he includes in post.
Don't you think it would be impractical and break the natural flow of posts ?

You are doing GREAT already Chris. Thanks for sharing.
  • I can't agree more.
  • I appreciate the feedback. I'll do something more obvious going forward.
  • I'm delighted to know about these, Chris, especially The Power of Giving. In recent years, I've discovered the incredible work that community foundations do on a local level in terms of supporting their area nonprofits as well as serving as a donor resource for cost effective and mission effective giving. "Connecting people who care with causes that matter" is our tagline, I'm going to read this book for ideas on inspiring an abundance mentality and a mindset for giving among people in our community. It's unfortunate the word "philanthropy" has been associated with wealthy people when there are so many ways to give for anyone of any means.
