Too Busy to Shop and Spent – Video Book Reviews

April 22, 2009 · Comments

In this edition of my video book reviews, I have to real winners! I was really pleased to read Kelly Skoloda’s Too Busy to Shop, which deals with understanding “multi-minding” women, and Geoffrey Miller’s Spent: Sex, Evolution, and Consumer Behavior.

Both books were filled with really great information about real core stuff involving the behavior and mindsets behind marketing. You could take both or either of these books into your office, shut the door, get out a notepad, and come out wanting to change at least 40% of what you’re doing with marketing, if not the whole thing. Skoloda focuses on women, but Miller goes deep into our psyche and sexuality. Both books are a big win, though I’d say that Miller’s book feels a bit more like fun reading crammed with actionable information (like a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down) whereas Skoloda’s book is inescapably “good for you.” Make sense?

Oh, and I start the video with our new kitten, Ms. Mew. By “our,” I mean the other people who live in my house. I came home and she was there one day. She sleeps on my head when I’m home.

Hahaha I've always maintained that the only reason anyone buys anything is because they're horny and they want to get laid... Dammit! I was gonna write that book.

Ms Mew is adorable too. :)
  • Maybe that kitten sleeping on your head is causing the allergy attacks...I know that's how it is for me, at my house, with my cat. :)

Thanks for the review Chris. Off subject a bit - what kind of video camera do you use for these video posts?
  • That's the lid of my MacBook laptop. If you want a new camera, use the Flip Mino (not the HD). You can check it out here.
  • ok I'm buying...more importantly using...thanks for review
  • Cool reviews. I'm reading "It's Not How Good You Are, Its How Good You Want to Be" by Paul Arden.

    Hi Chris,

I wanted to write and say hi and thanks. I stumbled onto your blog while looking at a Thesis demo. I am a new blogger and have found your best of section very helpful in getting started. I used a TON of stuff from those articles. Just wanted to give you that feedback! See you around.

  • Very kind of you, MIke. Thanks so much!
  • Good stuff Chris - Thanks (for taking long plane rides and reading for us)

BrandWeek also has a nice Marketer's viewpoint on "Too Busy to Shop" at:

  • You know I love you man, but is there any way you can change your RSS feed so that the first thing I see is NOT an Ad Words ad?

My expectation when I see your feed is great content, I open it in GReader and get an ad...then have to scroll down past it.
  • Now I've got two more books I'll need to read. I spend more time reading marketing related books than technical these days. Good sign or bad?

Also, how is video reviews working out for you? Better or not than text only reviews? I've been trying to review all of my new reads on Amazon and was wondering.
  • I spend most of my evenings buried up to my ears in real estate books, which by the way I do love to read them. I also enjoy a lot of tech type books, web design, search engine marketing, pretty much anything I can get my hands on, my wife thinks it is so boring.

BTW, interesting concept you have with the video book reviews, I might have to borrow the idea some day!

Nice reviews Chris. Looks like I have two books to add to my reading list.

By the way, has anyone ever told you that you appear to be a friendlier version of James Hetfield?;-)
