Universal Guide to Business Networking – Video Book Review

My friend, Terry Bean, sent me a copy of his new book, The Universal Guide To Business Networking (amazon affiliate link). I was eagerly awaiting this one, as Terry is renowned for his ideas on networking. It’s a slender volume packed full of information, and if business networking is important to you, I find this book particularly useful. (Quick note: I wrote the foreword, so if that biases me, you can take four points off for grace.)

It’s written with execution in mind, and thus, earns my respect. Here’s the video I shot of it:

Can’t see the video? Click here, or watch it on YouTube here.

People always ask which camera I used to shoot my video. I use the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (that’s a review of the camera).

Thanks for the review Chris, it's really helpful to hear what someone “in networking” thinks of a networking book.

I like the video format as well. I've seen more of this lately, seems to be a trend that's catching on.

Is that going to put all of us writers with radio faces out of business?

Terry is definitely good people. Thanks for giving him a shout-out.

Nah. I think video is just one other way to make a connection. You can do it with audio. There are thousands of podcasters out there. For me, video is easier to throw out than audio, simply because I do everything in one take, don't edit, and keep it brief.

  • http://socialassimilation.com/ Andrew J. Gay

Wow Chris, I must have been in my cave too long working, you changed your site! I totally dig that you're doing more video and that definitely sounds like a book thats worth reading. I am a book junkie… a business book junkie. BTW, don't know if you know this but in the top left hand corner of the page there are some links that I am not sure you would like there, you might wanna check them out. You always give such great content and you do well on camera. I look forward to networking with you as well in the near future. Thanks for all that you do for the community.

Thanks for highlighting Terry Bean's book (bought it) and his work creating Motor City Connect.

Terry is just one of the many great things going on in the Detroit digital media scene. You should have seen the energy at Future Midwest 2010 last night when Jay Adelson (Detroit-boy-done-good with Digg) inspired us all to kick it up a notch.

Felt like a “One Big Idea” pitch–you would have been proud!

    Hey Chris:
Sorry this is not a direct comment on this post. Looking at the new branding; compared to brand Brogan as I know it—COLD! My imagination of what might have happened —-Someone might have advised you that taking your picture out of your header is “more professional”. Brand Brogan as I know it is completely personal, which includes frequent random informal shots of your mug. :) Random Brogan Mug is the ESSENCE of the warmth of your brand. Red and grey/black might impress some as “more masculine” as well or more “rock star” or whatever—Brand Brogan as I know it is the quintessence of the new masculine, unafraid of a balanced yin/yang presentation. To paraphrase the Tea Party Fox-Faux Movement, I want my Brogan Brand Back! Anyone else noticing what I am responding to?

  • http://www.retirepreneur.com Donna Kastner/Retirepreneur

I agree with IndyPenDance. That “Random Brogan Mug” conveys warmth, sincerity, candor, and one heck of a passion for your topic. It's your secret weapon in this overcrowded world of social media & marketing gurus.

Chris said, “you can take four points off for grace”

    (devilish smile)

I will find and read this book.

Now I read some comments. Didn't notice that your mug was not in the header. Some of us are visual, some are not.

  • http://gregcryns.blogspot.com greg cryns

Yea, definitely check that link on the top left. Looks like a hack at work?

couldnt agree more…but he's hand held all of us for a good several years now…methinks this was a choice for the greater whole….beyond these borders…how would you want your home to welcome anyone from any part of the globe….what's their comfort level…kinda thinkin the redo is completely about that. brand brogan still evident on tweets, bnl newsletter and his facebook page. content here still stellar. i'm in for the long haul no matter what the look cuz goodness knows mine's changed much over the past decade.

I agree with Brandon. Terry is good people and thank you for giving a shout out to Detroit as well! Love it when other people mention the good things coming out of our city.

  • terrybean

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this. The foreword you wrote was spot on and your giving nature is so what we need. Thanks for being you Chris.

'Writing with execution in mind' ….. great statement, Chris! What if all of us arranged our thinking with execution in mind, Chris. Wow, how much more effective would our responses to life be?

Great review Chris. Terry is great and what he has done for Detroit is even better. I'm ordering my copy today!

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

The reason I took my picture out of the header is that I change my look (my hair and facial hair) far too often to have a static header.

There's a headshot in the sidebar now. It's there. Just moved.
