Viral advertising existed since before the internet. I remember my friends and I used to exchange tapes with funny tv ads back in the 90s. Later I made a couple of friend copywriters for encore marketing and they supplied me with great ads on dvds.

It’s an advert if it was produced with the aim of getting a brand’s chosen message to an audience. Which it was, so ad it is.
