Welcoming Colin Browning to the Pirate Ship

December 30, 2008 · Comments

Colin Browning- Stolen from Colin No, you’re not reading it wrong. A little while back, I welcomed Justin Levy to New Marketing Labs. I’m pleased to announce that Colin Browning is joining us as my VP of Business Development and Marketing.

Colin is recently of Prospero and then Mzinga, and so some of you already know him from the social media space. He and I have shared barbecue over at Mzinga’s Massachusetts with Jim Storer, Aaron Strout, Rachel Happe, Alexa Scordato, and others, and it’s been through many contacts with Colin, not to mention his work on Construcing Social that I’ve come to appreciate his work style.

Our core team is now assembled. We’re a startup, so that means we all do all the jobs, but here’s the rough breakdown of what we’re doing as a team:

  • Me- President, business development, social media strategy and execution planning, event content.
  • Justin Levy – General Manager, talent development, social media execution, event operations, marketing.
  • Colin Browning – VP Business Development and Marketing – business partnerships, sales, relationship strategies, marketing.

What’s cool about Colin is that he’s every bit as passionate about social media and the space as he is capable of helping me build business relationships. I’m thrilled to have him on the team, completing the core 3 who will execute New Marketing Labs.

What Comes Next

Colin, Justin, and I will be in Las Vegas to attend CES (Jan 7th – 11th) and several events around it. We’re looking to talk with people about business opportunities. If you want to connect with us, here’s what we’d love to talk about:

  • Social media strategy – see any of the three of us.
  • Event partnerships, exhibitor opportunities – see Colin. (email: colin at constructingsocial dot com)
  • Social media practitioners (people who want to help us execute) – see Justin. (@justinlevy – because if you’re looking to work with us on projects and aren’t on Twitter, ummm…).

Beyond that, all three of us love meeting people and hearing about what you’re working on. Hit us up.

Thanks and welcome, Colin, to New Marketing Labs. I’m looking forward to 2009!

  • Great to see smart people coming together Chris - congrats :)
  • Hey Chris,

Good job with the additions - both Colin and Justin are solid additions to any team, and to have both on board with you should make for a pretty unstoppable force.

My best wishes to you all for a prosperous, successful and rewarding 2009 and beyond. :)
  • Congrats -- if you guys stick with the pirate motif I'm seeing some real thematic opportunities:

    * actual and Twitter avatar eye patches
    * a monthly "walk the plank" list for failed social media attempts
    * doubloon-based rating systems
    * "ask the social media parrot" feature on the site

See, the possibilities are endless... Cheers!
  • Welcome to the pirate ship, Colin!
  • Great to see you are developing such a great team :D
  • Welcome to the pirate ship Colin! Plan on wearing an eye-patch a lot so everyone won't notice that you actually have one eye closed *trying* to get some rest. I regularly fall asleep while typing now.... :)
  • You must be doing really good, I remember when I started my first company I had to do the things you list above, plus I cleaned the office, and was the landscaper. Since you don't mention those functions I'm just assuming you have it covered by someone else..sweet deal =)

    Matt
  • I keep *trying* to get over here to say "woooooot!!" and congrats to all 3 of you - but the internet is about 20 Firefox tabs ahead of me today! :P

Doesn't really seem fair to the rest of us, you guys ganging up like that! ;)

    Unstoppable force comes to mind...
  • Sorry to see Colin leaving Mzinga but he will thrive in the small band of brothers you are assembling - and sounds like you will have a lot of fun! Glad to see things taking shape!
  • p.s. Hope to see some solid female pirates joining y'all soon - because there's nothing like the element of surprise... ;)
  • Ahoy! I await to see Colin's new garb. He's quite the innovator!

Here's a question, and I'm sure you don't have an answer yet, but as you decorate the ship, perhaps you'd do away with "traditional" titles and shift to new marketing titles, e.g. creative officer, ship's running mate, and parrothead?
  • Arrrrrr matey! Yer takin' our biz dev guy away! 'Tis a good opportunity for Captain Browning so I wish him and ye mates the best of luck! Mzinga will miss Colin's swashbuckling here in Burlington but we'll raise a pint to new adventures.

    Cheers,
    Patrick
  • You just continue to go up in the world. This is a nice snag for you. Hopefully you'll be able to play with the big boys now.
  • Great photo choice Chris and congrats Colin!

I hope to see the entire NML crew at Mzinga in the spring for some BBQ. Perhaps a guest hosting opportunity or the long-talked about BBQ throwdown!?!?

  • congrats guys! Looking forward to seeing you all in Vegas for CES.
  • Congratulations on the new team. Keep up the great work and informative posts.

  • Glad to see you are already taking pro-active steps going into 2009. Its good that you have outlined duties and such already, the last thng any pirate ship needs is two captains. For that almost always leads to a mutiny.
  • Colin to Pirate ship, hard to believe. Anyways, congrats to you for uplifted team.
  • Congratulations on the expansion - sounds like you have a real dream team in place. In the new year, would love to talk to you about all you mentioned - for us and for our clients, most of who are all in or getting into the social media space.

    Happy New Year!
    Ken
  • How do you divy up shares or ownership in a company as you add partners. I am a single person company and will soon be looking for people to partner with when I release the Facebook app I am building and un completely nieve as to what the proper formula is..HELP
  • Congrats Chris- you have an awesome team there-and wish only the most amazing 2009 for you and New Marketing Labs. I remember when we started our co 10 years ago-exciting times and know what you are going through-and feeling. It is an amazing journey. Happy New Year and may 2009 be the most amazing and most prosperous year for everyone!
  • Aaron Strout
Chris - you didn't actually hire that guy, did you? He's a bigger good off than I am. Oh crap, just forgot that you don't moderate your comments... oops!
  • Chris/Colin - wow, don't know what happened there. Someone must have hacked in and used my credentials. Colin is super awesome and will make your team ten times better!

Seriously though, I couldn't be happier for you guys. This us a great fit all around. Good luck with the swashbuckling!

    Best,
    Aaron | @astrout
  • Wow! Things are really rockin' and rollin' for you and the crew. I'm working with social advocacy groups and lawyers - trying to get them plugged in and show them how all of this works to create better everythings in their respective worlds -- and they're getting so jazzed about it. Yes, lawyers need social media, too. I know that if someone created an event about social media geared towards the legal profession, it would be a huge hit! [hint hint]. The ABA Journal has already done a few articles about the top 100 blawgs and attorneys using social media -- yet this is still a very unchartered area for most lawyers -- especially anyone over 35. I'm available if you want to toss around some ideas. :-) Many blessings of prosperity and joy to everyone in 2009. It's going to be great.
  • Chris,

Awesome team you have assembled. Sharing the workload will prove beneficial, and I'm looking forward to tracking your team's progress in 2009.

Someday I may be assembling a team of my own!

Happy New Year Chris! You have provided hours of meaningful and thought-provoking content! Thanks!

Hope to see you at #ASW09 in Las Vegas or at a dinner there Jan 10~12?

    Respectfully,

    Nicholas Chase
