What You Think You Sell

Chris Brogan Owns Breakfast There’s what you say you sell, what you think you sell, and what others think you sell. I’m in a bit of a quandary. I think these three facets don’t line up really well right now. I know what I sell and what I intend to sell. But I need feedback from you.

What do you SEEK from me? Not what I’m selling. What do you SEEK? What are you hoping to glean? When you come here, you say, “If I read X, I’ll be able to do something in my world HERE (where?).

I’d love to know the answer to this from your perspective.

If you’re shy, email it to me: chris @ ownermag . com

I have no idea. You always deliver what I’m seeking. Even if I don’t know it. Like The Freaks: I would have never thought I needed it, but look – because of it, I’m getting the things done that I need to get done to set myself up to hit my goals for the summer.

And that’s the problem with the question: our customers don’t usually KNOW what they want or need (attested to by Ogilvy). Business owners rarely see their copy as a source of great profit because they think they’re articulating what they sell accurately.

Take your Performance Enhancing Business twist. That is hard-hitting copy and will get the attention of the science-minded owner who’s been using these techniques on their bodies, but didn’t think to apply a version of it to their business. It also reeks of power and results, which is what every owner will tell you they want. Results.

By why aren’t they getting them? They don’t know. Full stop. LOL Thoughts?

What I am seeking from following Chris Brogan? Being new to this online industry thing, post a corporate life, I am seeking guidance, from virtual and actual mentors. The more you share your journey transparently, the better I am able to let my transparent journey show. By example you help me be me.

By following you and others like Pat Flynn, and Joel Comm, you have all helped me find my voice. Seeing how you are, let’s me open up my inner “freak” and let it show. I have dropped my “corporate glasses” and begun seeing the internet thru more creative eyes.

    One word… inspiration!

    • http://chrisbrogan.com/ Chris Brogan

Interesting. Do people buy inspiration? :)

      • http://iteachblogging.com/ Renee Groskreutz

Yes, I would say they do in your case. I just purchased your latest book in search of it.

      • http://lucychenfineart.com/ Lucy Chen

I know some (could be many) hobby artists buy online art courses for inspiration. They may not even go through all the materials in the course, let alone doing the works, but they just want to feel inspired by watching the videos, or looking at the teacher’s process. So yes, people definitely buy inspiration.

Your blog and newsletters are pretty great at making me go “hmm, yeah I should think about that” regarding how I should approach some aspect of my business. I always believe you’re going to help me figure out the best plan to realize my business goals. I go to you for your straightforward “Do it this way” approach to building and improving your business and life. And the fact that you do this in a very human way.

Your work feels very personal like your newsletter, as opposed to some of the more impersonal informational emails that land in my Inbox from others I follow. Your work feels more like the modern equivalent to the FDR fireside chats.

Three things, guidance, truth and inspiration. When I come here I hope to learn a tip or concept that I can walk away with. Also, I expect your brutal honesty to inspire me.

  • Cj Van Voorhis

Hi, I come here specifically NOT for inspiration, but for hard care truth about ownership and “HOW TO” training to learn how to streamline my online business efforts to d grow wealthy…in dollars AND in humanity.

  • http://lucychenfineart.com/ Lucy Chen

For things I can implement or use in my own life or business. Be it the way of thinking, or the way of doing, or something in-between.

  • http://www.chandlercrawford.com/ Chandler Crawford

I come to this site because I want real life examples of what is working, why it’s working, and how to implement it. This ranges from simple productivity ideas to the guts to help make life decisions that help me pursue what I feel is my true calling. This is sometimes in the simplest form possible – a sentence that you didn’t know would resonate and it does. When you are trying to build a “platform” or a new craft and really run with (or making any major change for that matter) it’s really nice to hear practical and transparent thoughts from someone who would be considered an authority on the topic.

That’s what I expect and get from this site – it’s why I comment and join the discussion. You’ve created a tribe, and I want to work towards that as well.

    Thanks for all you do.

You put “human” in selling/marketing, so I come to you learn more about that. You also advocate your own path/journey (i.e. being a freak), so I’m always curious about you implement your own freakiness.

Clarity. It’s number one on your list. I’ve always believed that I’m not selling anything, however according to everyone else on the planet I am. I truly need to know what that is.

I’m thinking of getting myself an international agent, so that when I’m out of work, I’m out of work all over the world… ;)

I am seeking inspiration (which you graciously provide) and an example to learn from. Thank you!

Good question. I seek perspective, insight, and experience. Your perspective on things (which helps expand my own). Your insight on your experiences, which is usually helping me in some sort of tangible way. Some of that has to do with being an OWNER (of business and life).

What I seek from you is the “how to” part of running a profitable business without sacrificing the human heart. Sometimes this is best delivered as a sermon with examples (Your Sawubona talk is a classic along this line). Other times, it’s a book review that you think will help. Still other times, it’s technology tips and tricks that can help me do whatever it is I do better and more easily. Frankly, it’s just keep doing what you’ve been doing. It’s been valuable to me for several years now and I thank you.

      The shake is super good.

      And thank you. :)

I think the most important thing I seek when I come here are the questions and your perspective. I think those of us who look to make a difference for others while earning an income for ourselves need answers, yes, but more than that, we need the right questions asked from the owner’s mind perspective. Answers change with the perspective from which the questions are asked. I’m a pretty bright girl and can come up with the right answers for myself – as long as I know I’m asking useful questions from the right perspective – and you help me do that.

I like that you share with us – in a very candid way – not only what works and why, but what hasn’t worked for you and why. You put yourself “out there” in ways that are both brave and humble, and by your example, give us permission to do the same.

Besides, anyone who believes in freaks and our power to make positive change in the world being just who we are…well, that person will always have my attention. :)

Start working at home with Google! It’s by-far the best job I’ve had. Last Wednesday I got a brand new BMW since getting a check for $6474 this – 4 weeks past. I began this 8-months ago and immediately was bringing home at least $77 per hour. I work through this link, go to tech tab for work detail
