When Pirates Board a New Ship

Brandie runs interactive marketing for the Luxor hotel and casino in Las Vegas, as well as running social media for other parts of the MGM/Mirage family. One way she does this is by managing the social media outreach for some of the properties. Brandie plays a big part in the start of the story of how the three of us at New Marketing Labs got access to stand on and take photos of Treasure Island’s famous ship, The Song. There’s a business communications point to this story.

Justin Levy came up with a crazy idea. He said, “I wonder if we can get on board the pirate ship out in front of Treasure Island.” I thought it was brilliant. We both immediately asked Twitter who knew whom and how we could get onto the ship. Justin is persistent and knows many people. He found Brandie quite quickly, and started the ball rolling.

What Comes Next

Brandie reached out internally into the MGM/Mirage team and found us enough connections to ask for help. I got connected to Christi Braginton, MGM MIRAGE’s Public Relations Director. It’s her obligation to preserve and protect this very expensive brands, and to enable the right kind of storytelling that will do the best justice to her properties. It’s a powerful responsibility, and if anyone reading has had the job of deciding what kinds of stories are important for a company, you know that evaluating these things is tough.

Christi didn’t owe us anything. Further, I ran into trouble connecting with her. I didn’t get her email message back to me and I fretted, so I begged Brandie to help me find my way to Christi again. My first phone call to Christi went poorly because it kept dropping out. So, given that all I’d done to make this an even harder decision, we didn’t expect them to say yes.

I finally spoke to Christi on the phone, and I told her what I wanted to do. She was very professional, very polite, and we had a great conversation about my goals, and how I wanted to use the photos. After a really great talk, Christi agreed, and here’s why:

Outreach and Relationships Have Legs

Having Brandie listening in the social sphere meant that she knew we were coming to town. She knew more than many of the other hotel and casinos. She was human-aware. Thereafter, Brandie was able to connect the rest of the organization. Everyone was given the challenge of making an exception for a blogger and his tiny 3-person company, and they did it.

And now, with the help of super-photographer Brian Solis, I want to show you just one of a few amazing photos shot from our very own personal pirate ship, the Treasure Island Song (which is the centerpiece of a really cool outdoors live show every night), here is one of our photos. Justin Levy, Colin Browning, and me, on board a pirate ship:

  • What a great example of the power social media holds in business. It has always been my belief that social media is about networking and meeting people that can help you and vice-versa. That help can be in getting you new business, meeting people in your field of work or getting to take a tour of a pirate ship.

    Thanks for sharing, Chris. But with all due respect, I'm struggling to see what's so groundbreaking about getting on TI's ship for a few shots. What's the lesson learned here? Maybe that's a topic for a forthcoming post, just wondering what the goal is.
  • Great demonstration of business communications at work. It took the right idea, people with vision and the right circumstance to pull off. On the surface alone, MGM as a company reinforces its brand with very little effort and expense, with a very gutsy decision by a couple of progressive decision makers. I'd be interested in the nuts and bolts of the actual sales pitch that transpired. It would make a good case study. I hope you decide to write it.

  • Great post Chris. I work at Schipul-The Web Marketing Company and our story is very important to us. We fiercely protect it but also work very hard to share it with others and invite people to be a part of it. It is really cool to see how much the Houston community had become an integral our story. We would not be the company we are if it wasn't for that.

    I think your story is a great example of business communication and of companies inviting their publics to become a part of their story. I love that you got to be a pirate out of it :)

    Social media allows you to connect to people on a more personal level. I feel as though I know many of the people I follow on twitter, including you Chris, on a more personal level even if they're not following me back. When you feel like you know someone personally, you feel more inclined to help that person if they need something. By connecting on social media, we are connecting as real people and this is a great example of how that connection contributes to helping each other in the offline world as well.

    Can't believe people need to ask, "Why?" You had a dream and you followed through. The takeaway is that relationships make things happen and social networking builds relationships. Why does everything need to be groundbreaking? Why isn't the story cool in and of itself? I've been waiting to hear the outcome of your quest to go aboard the TI ship... glad to hear that you made it!

  • It's called Marketing Strategy (for Christy). If indeed the purpose was just to see the power of social media, then the objective was achieved (and of course it was fun and exciting to make it happen). For me, I found Chris' blog interesting because of tips that I can use to promote my own business and improve my blog, and info that I can share with clients. So, my question for the underlying strategy relates to my reason for connecting to Chris. If there is nothing deeper to it, the fact that he made it happen will certainly have me thinking broader when brainstorming in the future. At any rate, I'm sorry Chris hasn't chimed in, since the question has been asked twice. Cheers.

  • The pirate photo relates to The Beauty of Pirate Ships and Privateers - Backing Your Pirate Ships. It relates to a business strategy I've been pitching since last fall that I've used to build my company.

    There are more pictures in the set all taken by Brian Solis.

    How is this in any way groundbreaking? Hmm, I didn't say that it was. Is it different than how most businesses act on a given day? Test it out for yourself. Ask a business to go out of its way to do something where there's no obvious value back to them for doing it. See what you get for a response.

    I think that social web-friendly companies are doing things that more traditional companies are not, and that these have ripple effects in their culture.

  • Chris, thanks so much. I just joined the community a few weeks ago, and didn't have the benefit of the earlier posts. So, not only was it brililant for it's own sake, it really is brilliant as a physcial, single image embodiment of your business philosophy or 'brand' per se. Also, kudos to you for respectfully explaining it to me. (e.g. for helping older folk who don't always get it but who want to get it and use it see the light clearly).
