Where to Stay in Santa Barbara

June 2, 2009 · Comments

Vista Riviera in Santa BarbaraSo, Graham Farrar is kind of hard to pin down. He has this huge Web 1.0 background. He was instrumental in Sonos. He created Whatmusic.cd and most recently iStoryTime (an iPhone app for kids books). But also, in case that wasn’t enough, he runs Santa Barbara Vacation Rentals. When Justin Levy and I mentioned that we were visiting Santa Barbara for a client meeting, Graham mentioned that he had a place for us to stay.

We had no idea that’d be the huge 5 bedroom vacation property called the Vista Riviera. This thing was massive. To be honest, I got lost twice the night we stopped in. It was this super big, super well-appointed place, that looked out over all of Santa Barbara from atop this hill.

There was a nice swimming pool in the back and a hot tub that hit the spot after a long and cramped plane ride across the US. I was able to access all this right from my bedroom (I chose the downstairs bedrooms that faced the hills; Justin took the master bedroom upstairs).

The place isn’t exactly for people looking to stay somewhere cheap. It rents out at $5000 – $7000 a week. But for a retreat, or for a family that has a higher end style in mind, this is the place to go. If you want somewhere less expensive but still top end, check out my post about the Canary Hotel downtown.

Graham runs a bunch of these properties, which is weird, considering I was thinking of him as this friend of my friend, Tom Meyer, and then he turns out to be this crazy inventor (oh, he also created Baby Toupee), who also rents out huge luxury properties.

Thanks for letting us stay at one of your Santa Barbara Vacation Rentals, Graham. It was cool.

    7,000 a week for a room--

    obscene amount of money--

    America= greed

    sorry chris-- don't sell your soul--- other than this--you do good work!
  • Not one room. 5 bedrooms with a kitchen, several bathrooms, pool, hot tub, etc, etc, etc.

    My point was that it'd be cool for corporate retreats, for business teams, etc.

    There are plenty of ways to go cheaply. This was another way.

    Hey Jim,

    Just FYI its $7k a week for 5 rooms (and a pool etc).. which many people share between two families.. in a town where the high end hotels are $600/night for one room and you're stuck eating out every meal it actually works out to be pretty inline with hotel rates and gives you a lot of value.

    No debate that $7k is a lot of money and can do lots of things... just wanted to point out its a whole house for not a lot more than the hotels charge for a room.

    have fun
    graham
