Why 78 is Better Than 878

We move the Grasshoppers group to Ning, and after about a day, we have 78 members over there:

Over at the Facebook group, we have 878 members.

But every single person who makes the jump to the Ning group did so with effort. They didn’t click an “Accept” button in their Facebook messages next to a “Zombie Biting” game invite. They picked up their things politely and moved over and set up a little office on Ning.

The group will grow, and I’m not worried a lick about the numbers. But for every name I see join the group on Ning, I feel like the premise made sense: Grasshoppers is people, not software.

If you want to join a movement where the simple goal is to be helpful, I encourage you to come join the Grasshoppers.

It wasnt until I was back and looking at Ning with a SNO eye that I realised that Ning is offering me the platform that facebook wont. Its offering an RSS feeds for just about everything I am getting involved in on Ning. Anyway I always thought Soylent Green was People ? I do think though that those whom make the effort beyond the token button press are those who are contributing positively.

I actually joined Facebook a short while back and made fun of the whole concept (quietly in my mind) as it didn’t fit who I am at all. However I only became active of FB after being invited to join your new group there. When you decided to make the move, I joined Ning, I’m always trying everything anyway. It matters little what software is used as long is it’s used to do something good for someone.

Just curious, why did the group move to Ning? I saw something about a new google group, and now am kind of confused as to what’s going on…

Moved because Facebook has no RSS, because facebook TOS says they own everything we do there. No other reasons.

Careful, Professor. If it’s all about the people and not the software then why worry about RSS at all? Communities can exist without feeds.
