Why I Am Still Not Ready for New Twitter

No rows.

I’ve used Seesmic Desktop for quite a while for my computer-side Twitter client. I’ve lately been also using Hootsuite. In both cases, they let me see Twitter in a way that I need, for all the data that comes at me. I have rows upon rows of searches, lists, and other information.

New Twitter? It’s gorgeous. It works better. It’s a huge improvement over the previous Twitter. But no rows.

Nice site, gang, but if we could have rows, I’d love it even more.

    Rows, eh? And all this time I thought that TweetDeck and HootSuite showed information in columns! :-P

      Rows = choice of accounts, userlists, saved searches, etc in far left column of Seesmic. I personally prefer 1 content column with rows of filters on the left side as opposed to the multi-column layouts of default Seesmic and Hootsuite.

    You know what else really sucked? A 2:02 video with only :50 of good content and that doesn’t come in until 1:08 of the video. Waste of my time!

    I hear ya….rows would be nice….the new way of listing (and being able to re-tweet from within the list without accessing individual profile) provides a kind of sudo-row view….Im loving the new interface… :-)

    Hi Chris. I have just been turned on to Lists so for me this is sufficient and I find TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop too much for the average user who probably will not have more then just a few listings. It’s a use case for a more advanced user like yourself.

    Not a fan of Twitter. I use to use Twitter until my wife got me hooked on Tweetdeck and I haven’t looked back.

    You raise a good point, Chris: the new web version of Twitter continues to leave power users out in as much cold as one of our recent New England mornings. But honestly, I think it’s by design.

    A couple of weeks ago Twitter included a graph in a blog post ( http://blog.twitter.com/2010/09/evolving-ecosystem.html ) showing that 78% of Twitter users use twitter.com (as opposed to another client). People who use Twitter as religiously as we do (and a lot of your readers and commenters, I’d expect) have tweaked and retweaked dozens of sorted lists and pinpointed searches of related terms and hashtags. But I’d wager that a majority of the 78% that use twitter.com for their tweeting probably don’t follow enough people to make even one list beneficial, and a lot of them probably don’t even know what a hashtag is. I’d say the new site is geared for them, not us.

    Does that mean it’s good or bad? I really don’t know. But I don’t think Hootsuite, Seesmic, or TweetDeck have to worry at all. They’re where the power users live.

    Have to be honest and say that I can’t really see what all the fuss is about the new Twitter – I’ll be sticking with Hootsuite and Tweetdeck for now…

    Interesting Chris. New twitter still not arrived in Spain but will be interesting to look at. I am another Tweetdeck user who never actually visits the Twitter page unless Tweetdeck is “Having Issues” I would have thought that the reason to make the page different is to bring people back to the homepage so it becomes more relevant in the same way that people generally stay within Facebook when using Facebook. Ultimate monetization for the Twitter owners lies in having people visit their site (Or selling the company of course :-))

    Yup, hooty and seismic for me too.

    I’m sure the new layout will bring in some “laggards”, however, it’s still a far cry from what is really needed.

    Still a change is as good as a rest – and let’s face it Twitter is such an ancient site!

    The #NewTwitter have been there for a long time… I have been using Power Twitter since the Firefox days, and now still on Chome in conjunction with Twitter Extender.
    I really like Desktop applications (the new Seesmic Desktop is HOT) it is perfect when you want to focus on tracking things but it is not really handy when you are surfing the web.
    For now I haven’t been satisfied by the way you can visualise profiles in those apps, I like seeing backgrounds, people someone is following … Every time I want to have a better idea of who is tweeting, I go on his profile ( and yes I know you can visualise bio and profile pictures in desktop apps but it is not enough ) .
    Just feel a bit sorry for some third party developers but I am waiting to test the new twitter first hand ^^

    I currently use Tweetdeck on my desktop but I wonder what the future will hold for desktop apps once NewTwitter is implemented. For me, it looks like I will be ditching Tweetdeck once NewTwitter is online, since new Twitter will have pretty much what Tweetdeck has to offer.

    I suspect that as things get added, a little will be lost of the elegant simplicity of the original concept… but hey, who am I to hold back progress?! I’m looking forward to exploring the new features… not looking forward to updating my training notes.

    It stinks Chris. Here in Oklahoma the new Twitter hasn’t arrived yet. I’m pretty excited about it though. It’s finally going to be as usable as Twitter for iPhone.

    Not sure if it’ll replace Seesmic or not. I don’t use multiple columns as much as you do, so I just might join Shel Israel and just use the Web. We’ll see.

    I don’t have a Twitter yet. I just don’t see its importance to me right now since all of my contacts are in Facebook.
