Your First Comment On This Blog

February 5, 2010 · Comments

Hello. You. Yes, I want to talk to you, the person who has never yet left a comment, but who has read forever and ever here.

Today’s your day. You’re up. I’d love for you to leave just a small comment and say hi.

Now, given that 45,000 people get this blog sent to them daily, and that another 170,000 people swing by the site at least once every month, and given that I’m good for usually 20 or so comments a post, that means that this post, if you play along, should receive something like 44,980 comments.

But really, I just wanted to hear from you. Say hi? You, the long-time reader and consumer of all things here. Just say hi.

For everyone else, my wonderful friends who give me more than I give you when you comment here, thank you. I’m grateful for your contributions to my madness. You matter.

Let’s all greet the new folks. Shall we?

If you enjoyed this post, please consider leaving a comment or subscribing to the feed to have future articles delivered to your feed reader.

  • I have just started to do some blogs commenting.

What you have mentioned is quite true, I knew about this much earlier but only now I REALLY take action to build backlinks(I have to be honest with you)

Seriously, I love the part where being the first 5 to comment on new blog posts.

    Thank you very much
  • I can't remember if I've ever posted here before, but I will now! I was waiting to become the 1000th commenter, but after a month of lurking, I finally gave in, since it's now more important that I knock one more thing off my "To Do List"! LOL.
  • Long time reader, admirer, but never leave comments. Enjoy you like nobody's business!
  • Hi Chris! Paul Merrill said I should stop by to leave a comment so here I am. You did a short video interview a while back with a restaurant owner who is rocking with twitter. Good stuff, I really enjoyed it. The counter says that I'm commenter #968, so that leaves what, about 43500 to go? I'd be happy if 968 people just visited my blog in 30 days time, so keep up the good work!
  • Hey Chris,

sorry I missed this e-mail from almost a month ago but wanted to make a comment anyway. I really find your blog to be one of the best that I read on a daily basis. I am bias of course as I am a new business blogger and I want to learn as much as I can from some the best in the business. I have been in the Internet space since 1999 and worked in marketing and web development for some time, helping a lot of companies get ahead. I finally made the leap into social media marketing and blogging (I know very late to the game) and just wanted to say thanks for all you do.

    Sincerely,

Now that your blog is almost a month old, I've finally decided to bite the bullet and comment. This is all new to me: blogs, social networking, etc. After 40 years in HR, I'm reinventing myself and developing my own blog and website... pursuing my passion and causes.. it's great --- but overwhelming at times. I love the energy of your blog and like-minded entities like Copyblogger ++. Thanks for your inspiration & insightful invitation to so many out there who are holding back.

    Hi Chris,

I just went through about a year and half's worth of archived posts. Great stuff. I look forward to reading more!

    ~Alex
  • Hi Chris, since you want to hear from me, I'd just like to tell you how much I enjoy reading your blogs. I find them very helpful in getting me and my business up to speed with the new social marketing. Thank you ,thank you, thankyou!
  • Marvin Tumbo
I have been receiving your newsletters from the comfort of my Inbox and I am yet to leave a comment. Thanks for the great work you and value you provide.
  • justinmatthews
this is my first time on this blog and so my first comment on here, I am100%! This is a great post to get some people involved! I will be back to comment some more...:)
  • Landed here while reading the @LisaBarone post on leaving comments, wanted to say hi!
  • Hey there dawg!
  • Hi

I get your feed sent to my inbox and your blog is the most interesting out of the few blogs I read. Why? Because you're not trying to sell me something (or tell me what application to use) with every post. I like the way you mix things up and take us into your private life from time to time. I enjoy the posts about everyday things like the nice pastries at a particular store.

Most of all I like your writing style because your not trying to preach to me or teach me, you're sharing your experiences. So I feel that we're on the same level when I read your posts. I don't know whether you're Canadian or American but other professional bloggers like to think of themselves as leaders, teachers, holier than though personalities.

Your voice online is quite genuine.
    Cheers from Australia
  • Catching up on reading from when I was on vacation. I'm a long time reader, first time commenter. So I'm coming out of the woodwork to say hi
  • 1,000 comments. Phew. Looks like it worked! This is not my first comment here by the way.
  • Ask and you shall receive. Thanks for all of your great posts, this is my first blog comment ever!
  • My first time...er- posting that is :) I am a Third Tribe Member and also getting ready to implement Thesis. So I guess you could say I am a fan! Or a tribemember or whatever you want to call it. I am also headed to a StartUp Entrepreneur conference in Oklahoma that Chris will be speaking at within the next few weeks, but I swear to you it is pure coincidence, I am not stalking Chris Brogan. I repeat, I am not stalking Chris Brogan. Hehe- I have learned a lot from this blog though, so I just thought I'd oblige and leave a little comment love.
  • Ok, I admit I have commented before, but I thought that as you were asking for it, I would do it again. With that I want to say thanks for your constant flow of inspirations. Keep it up!
  • Long time reader, first time commenter. Love the blog, continue to recommend it to others. Find it very useful in writing my own blog (www.PlaybillsVsPayingBills.com).

    Keep up the good work!
  • Hi Chris, Occasional reader, first time commenter. The information you share is so relevant to my business, I need to check in more often.
    Thanks
  • davidcarroll
I really like your idea of getting everyone to comment. You give more than you get for sure. People often read but don't want to step out and comment and get noticed. You do so much when you encourage them to get in the game. Great Job. That is giving real value plus you've given me some ideas on how to be better. Thanks
  • elevenser
What I'm trying to figure out, Chris, is how you keep up with the comments, and whether you really get the chance to read them all let alone visit the links.

Anyway, if you do read these, you'll know that I've just invested in Trust Agents. That means I'm betting on you.
  • DashingFactor
I agree with you entirely and, personally, my hesitation is due to my lack of or seems to be a lack of having something of value to contribute. Guess that will have to change and this will be my first steps.
  • Hey Chris! I wanted to say that your book is awesome! Thank you for taking the time to share your tips with everyone. It's refreshing to see people who help others along the way.
  • ZenGlen
Ok, I'll bite. Yeah, I like lurking too. Figured I'd wait until I had something remarkable to add to the discussion...

    ...um, still drawing blanks. ;)
  • I am a daily commenter. I really like your stuff. I am a great fan of your writing style and content. Keep up the great work.
  • you know what's crazy man...every blogger should have a post like this (the numbers would need to be adjusted in most cases), but this is the only time I've read it. Werd up. Good call!
  • lizbdavis
    Hi Chris,
I love your blog. It is a huge help to me and to my students. I just started teaching a high school digital journalism class. My kids are blogging and they are using a lot of your advice to help them get started. Thanks for helping us all to be better bloggers. Now feel free to come over to my blog and say hello! http://www.edtechpower.blogspot.com
  • Just saying hi!

    Hi Chris. Hi Folks.
I'm pretty sure I've commented before, but, eh, what the hell - why not say Hi again?
    Hugs!

Love your blog, Chris. I'm the Director of Sales at a mid size hotel and am just getting a handle on Social Media. I bought your book Trust Agents, and am getting some key insights. At this point, I'm digesting alot of information, so I don't comment(yet), but I am reading. Thanks for being there!
  • Ok, ok, I'll comment. Happy now? :-)
  • Hello Chris, I am one of those readers who have never left a comment before, and yes, I am also a consumer of all things here. I guess about half of what I know about social media and more is thanks to you :)
    Big thank-you!
well just wanted to say hi.. and please keep the brilliant updates coming!
    Regards from Germany,
    Nicole
  • I just found you on my recommended feeds to subscribe too.
  • Hi Chris,
Thanks for the prod and request. Apologies for the delay but celebrating my 40th in Barcelona with my other half, Hana, took priority ;)

I've not been a subscriber for long but love your posts and insights. Would appreciate any comments or feedback on my blog www.adrianswinscoe.com - my blog about ideas for growing businesses based on work that I do with my clients.

    Best wishes,

Hello :) Seems I'm a couple dates late to the party. However, I'm happy to be 934/44,980(I think! Not much else to say, but I do enjoy contributing to the "madness" as you so eloquently put. Have a lovely day!

Hi Chris I'm listening to Trust Agents as an audio book...great work, super interesting and brilliantly thought provoking
  • Hi! Chris

Been reading your Blog for over a year now. Of late I have been a regular reader going through everyone of your daily posts.

You are generating some great stuff here and this itself was a wonderful call to action.
  • lamontclark
What's Up Chris! Yes this is my first time leaving a comment, mostly because subscribe to the posts and get them via email, and partly because Im too lazy to come to the site and leave a comment. But here I am, leaving a comment. More to come!
  • RebeccaGaynier
Chris - you are da bomb!

I met you 2 years ago at Pittsburgh's PodCamp. I was "an idea."

You told me to start blogging (I started that night) and you advised me to begin moving on "my idea" and not to wait for it to be perfect.

    So we got busy!

You provided great advice, because I've grown into my blog, which is all about running and being a mom, and I love it (arunningmom.com)! The idea has since become a global community, called iTwixie.com. We're represented by the entire USA and we have girls actively engaged on the site from France, England, Australia, India and many more countries as well. iTwixie is growing every day.

We sought to start a revolution, and the revolution is on! iTwixie.com brings girls between the ages of 8 and 14 -- from all over the world -- together to inspire, bond, challenge and have fun. TRUSTe has certified our site to be safe and FTC COPPA compliant, and iTwixie goes the extra mile to read and review every post so there's no worry about bullying, inappropriate content or any kind of disrespectful activity.

    iTwixie rocks!

And I owe a huge thanks to you.

So here's a quick "hi" to let you know you rock and to say thank you. I love reading your blog. You inspire me and keep me and my team thinking about new things to do every day!

    You go boy!
  • Hi Chris,
Just to say hi from Brazil. I've been reading your blog for an year and it's been very helpfull when it comes to carrer struggles.
    Thanks a lot for sharing!
  • Hey there Chris, can't remember if I have commented here or not yet. Love your blog and all your info. You are awesome. Keep up the great work.
  • good and thanks for your share.i will learn from you.so nice.http://www.ecougg.com
  • Hi Chris and thanks for all the ideas and advice you post here.

However, I made the mistake of scrolling through everyone's comments and then realsiing the add new comment box was only at the top. But at least I got to see all the comments, even if I do now have a blister on my mouse scroll-wheel finger :)
  • Hi Chris,

sorry, but at the moment there's nothing more to say from my side ;-)
  • Hi Chris. I have commented on a few of your posts in the past but I had to leave a comment today too. I have been reading your blog here for a few months and I am enjoying your writing style and I am learning as well.

    Thanks!
  • Hi Chris. I have commented on a few of your posts in the past but I had to leave a comment today too. I have been reading your blog here for several months and I am enjoying your writing style and learning a lot as well.

    Thanks!
  • Hi Chris! LOL! That would be me! I've been reading your blog for ages! Never left a comment. Didn't know what to say really :) Will make more of an effort from now :D
    So uhm.. HI!
  • Hi Chris,
Love your work. Only really started paying attention to it seriously in the last several months. So being honest I get to your posts when I remember, but not each one. When I do I am always rewarded, so I come back for more. I love the app for that and checking Twitter for updates.

Appreciate the example you set for others on authenticity in all - life, work etc.

    Warm regards,
    Jenn
  • I just starting reading your blog. I am slowing trying to find what my passion is and believe it centers around helping people find their hidden potential. I have a blog that I'll be posting what I think are helpful tactics to move people to the next level in their lives.

Your blog is very helpful and really appreciate the content.

Guilty as charged. Blogging is one of my 2010 New Years resolutions. BTW, I like your iPhone app. Great reading when I am stuck in beautiful Washington DC traffic!

Hi Chris, this may or may not be my first comment. But if I have left one before, it's been quite a while. I always enjoy your posts -- and more than that, I enjoy your underlying philosophy on business and human interaction. To me you're like a folk hero of the business world. And folk hero is pretty much the highest compliment I give. Thanks for all you do!
  • One of the best blogs out there- a bit to many posts makes it difficult to keep up with though.
  • Though I'm not a business but a non profit, you help me think outside the box. I've been slowly reading through your book and pulling what is usefull to me. I think I may have commented before.
Two of my www.checkitout.org or www.itwow.org
  • Brilliant - a post just asking for comments on the blog...I need to try that on my photography blog. (I guess it just worked!)

    Thanks as always Chris.
  • Ah! You caught me. :)

Hi, Chris! My name is Anita, and I read your blog and follow you on Twitter. Thanks for sharing good advice and ideas. I look forward to reading more.
  • Sure, I'll contribute to the 40k comments :).

After reading a ton of information here and other places, I finally acted and launched my own blog last week. It's off to a slow start, but I'll get the hang of it.
  • Thanks for the invite. I appreciate your Kitchen Talks... they are great little idea snippets. In the last month or so you have quickly grown to be high up on my blog roll. I guess it is now time to get more involved. Thanks for the nudge!
  • Erin McMahon
Hi Chris! I don't comment often - mostly because it seems like any point I might have to make gets made before I get here! But I'm an avid reader - keep on keepin' on! ;)
  • Sacrilegious comment:

The blogosphere / twitterverse is an incredible place. Key voices people listen to (I love that I see the work "curate" more and more) are truly helpful. The quantity of incoming information is huge and the opportunity to provide comments is clearly there. What you've done here is actually pretty fascinating.

BUT, present post/comment excluded, despite all the good advice from numerous luminaries on how to communicate, there is still too much info that is not net enough - - for both entries and comments. Once there are too many comments (or worse, too many self-serving or weak comments - - or irrelevant comments, I am done scrolling.

And what about all the Tweets and retweets from our naturally formed groups of people we follow. Too much repetition or too many tweet with little content makes Twitter too noisy.

We have to recognize that we live in the world of short attention spans, especially with the onslaught of info available.
  • Hi Chris,

Well the fact that you and your mother have now told me to comment, I feel I must :-)

As you said in another post, you have no marketing background but just work extremely hard for your success, it isnt just luck. Your blog gives me inspiration at the begining of my journey.

Im looking forward to meeting you at Like Minds. I cant promise ill look like Lady Gaga (ask Diane) but ill make myself known!

Im working on the website with Scott so if you need anything else, please let me know.

    Speak soon
    Katrina
  • I see you!
  • Hi Chris, first thank you for your time and effort, for the amount of helpful information you give away. I'm in the UK and would like to come and hear you, where is the list of forthcoming speaking engagements? I can't find it. There is still some doubt about social media, it would be interesting to have a story about social medias effect on a business over a period of time, rather than just a snapshot. In other words how you engage and persuade a client over a period and then come up with concrete results, a conversion story. Like many others I wish I had more time to read all of your output.
  • Hi Chris,

As a blogger myself, I enjoy comments. Another blogger, Noah Kagan, offered what I consider to be the pithiest [over]statement of the gratification I suspect many of us feel when someone takes the time to post an authentic, intrinsically-motivated comment: Comments make me Orgasm.

That said, I'm glad that not everyone who reads one of my posts posts a comment. At least for my blog, I believe that some corollary of Sturgeon's Law holds - "Ninety percent of everything is crud" ... or to be somewhat more charitable to myself - 90% of what I write is not terribly interesting or useful to the people who read it.

In a somewhat more thoughtful vein about what appears to be a consistent 90% "rule", Christopher Allen recently posted a series of insightful articles on Community by the Numbers, where he notes - and explains why - among other things "90% of an online community tends to be lurkers, 9% tends to be intermittent participants, and 1% tends to be active participants".

I tend to think this is a good thing, as I don't have something valuable to contribute to everything - or even many things - I read, and suspect most people are like this. With 906 comments already on this blog post, I suspect not many people are reading each others' comments (I know I'm not). I'm not even sure whether you will read it ... but at least with Disqus, I can reference this comment in case I want to elaborate on it later ... say, on my own blog.

Finally, I wanted to note that I just recently discovered, enjoyed and [so] started following your @broganmedia feed. Out of curiosity, I clicked on the 13 "Found this neat" links currently appearing on the first page of this feed, and did find several of them neat ... but in clicking through to the articles - all of which allowed for comments - I didn't see any comments posted by you on any of those sites ... and so I'm wondering what percentage of posts or sites you visit you post comments on ... and whether that differs substantially from the proportions you see here.

Oh, BTW, in case you do read this, all of the bit.ly links to PaidContent.org in your @broganmedia feed appear to be broken.

    Joe.

    Chris,

I am one of the many who read but don't write. I enjoy your blog very much and I am continually surprised by your fresh ideas and the sheer number of them.

As Sundance said to Butch Cassidy,"You just keep thinkin'. That's what you're good at."

  • I've been lurking for a few weeks, thanks for the prod to post. I never really used to surf the comments section but now that I am looking to build my own community I realize how key comments are.

Thanks for sharing, I've learned so much!
  • Hey Chris - I'm comment #904...woot woot!!
  • The odds of you, Chris reading my comment out of hundreds might be slightly slim but I just love the call to comment. I think everything you write, Chris, is brilliant and absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE your work!! I sure hope you're reading this :).

  • What's up Chris? I don't comment enough, guilty as charged. But your wise thoughts and tireless advocacy for the humanization of the web make an impact on me every day. Thanks for doing what you do. Alex

Ok, It took me a couple of days to comment. Don't get to read as much as I like, but this was a good opportunity to register with Disqus which I learned of over the weekend. I loved you blog post on chasing the Goal and not the method. Very meaningful to getting my career into a new (and better) space. It's nuggets like these that keep me reading your blogs. Thanks

HI Chris, I've left comments before (so I guess I'm cheating a little bit), but wanted to tell you I really liked the whole idea behind this post. I hope you manage to reach your goal of drawing all you readers out of the comment shells!
  • Hey Chris,
Glad to add a comment. It appears I might be comment # 888. :-)

I always enjoy reading your blog and considering your insight on various topics. Thanks for sharing so much!

Good Monday morning to you Chris... as well to all of the amazing people (Trust Agents galore) who follow your blog, interact with one another, and help those of us who are not quite as involved to inch ever so slowly further into involvement with one of the more well known and well respected communities in the blogosphere.

I actually reply to you on Twitter and repost your insight quite often... but have never commented here on your blog. AND YET, that is one of the things you encourage throughout all of your efforts (Trust Agents, Twitter, Facebook, here, and when you speak at events, webinars, etc). So, I apologize and promise to be more involved... not as much as many others, but I will pop my head in from time to time to say how much one of your blogs affected me, or that I have passed it along to my sphere of influence.

Have a wonderful week, Chris... and the Trust Agents who operate from the same paradigm. May you all build your social currency bank accounts full of wealth unknown!
  • Jen
You seem to cover about everything in your blogs, so I have nothing more to say! I'm young and learning, trying to drink up every ounce of information out there. So, thanks! Your blog is one of my favorites. Give mine a gander... 20somethingprofessionals.wordpress.com

    Hi Chris,

I'm guilty too of absorbing all your great observations like the sponge reader I am & not commenting when I should. I'll try to do better. That said, keep up the amazing work! I applaud your consistency and strength of voice - and really value your work and insights. Kudos!

Yes, you're right. I read your blog every day (love it) but have yet to leave a comment. I'll try to let this be the 1st of many, as I know there is nothing sweeter than a comment left in one of my posts.
  • Hey Chris,

Love reading your blog, love the honestly and down to earth style.

Mike Howard here. I used to run a social network called Kiwibox.com (ran it for 10 years from 1999-2009 before selling it to a public company), now I run biz dev for a company called GizaPage.com (we create white label social media hubs for companies....The Smithsonian is our largest client).

I love reading your blog, and have been a subscriber for about 4-5 months now. Thanks for having me,

  • Hi Chris,
I started reading your posts when I was preparing to start a multi author blog without any idea how to. It's been inspirational, thank you very much for your general generosity. The blog is now up and running: http://www.vitae.ac.uk/rsblog

    all the best, Tennie
  • Hi Chris,
I read just about every post and I really like your style and insight. I will continue to absorb it all! Thanks for reaching out and "making" me comment. Love the creativity and simplicity. Rock on!
