A Hotel Built For Media Makers

November 11, 2008 · Comments

Canopy Bed The Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara, California, is where I’m staying for two nights while visiting with a client here to talk about social media strategy. I’m in a huge canopy bed that stands about four feet off the ground. The bathroom has custom tile. Everything about the place is little personalized touches. But what I like is this:

Plugs, plugs, plugs. There are outlets everywhere for my gear. And there’s a monstrous TV (I don’t have one at home, so this is nice, too), and there’s a radio beside the bed with a docking station that fits my iPhone. There’s a really classy Keurig coffee maker which screams for me to try it. There’s a stack of books and a pair of binoculars.

When I got to the room, there’s a beautiful stainless steel bowl with a lid and it’s full of perfectly cold ice. As if it was just put there. (Maybe it was). Everything smells new.

My view is perfect.

The hotel is not my client (though I wish it were). I just wanted to write it up and say that this place is beautiful, is worthy of your time, and given the level of quality here, it’s well worth the $215 of a night.

Praise the good things you experience in life, friends. It’s every bit as important as calling out the less-than-stellar moments.

One thing I wish were here: a simple social network that let me know who else had opted in for serendipitous meetings.

  • You forget to mention the customer service they have the employees are pretty approachable and very friendly to guests
  • Hmm... maybe I'll have to stay there next year for CJU! How far is it from the Fess Parker?
  • Ahhhh, Santa Barbara is keen on addressing every creature comfort - even the ones you didn't know you had (in reference to the fresh ice). As a Santa Barbara resident, I can attest that we try to take life (including work) at a slightly more relaxed pace, because you don't have to be stressed out and working 80 hours a week to be successful.

    Thanks for sharing this, Chris!
  • Thanks for letting me know about that hotel in Santa Barbara. I'm always looking for new and interesting hotels to stay at that give people a nice experience.

One things I just love? Free wi-fi! That should be standard!
  • Traveling for trade shows and business can be tough, so it's great when hotels and airports accomodate your needs. Maybe we'll stay here next time we're in the area. Looks like your wife wanted to join you, too!
  • The hotel sounds relaxing and perfect. The only bummer when I travel and end up in a nice hotel alone is just that, that it's a great experience that I wish I could be sharing with my family.

one other thing you might wish were there might be your wife
i'm the one who loves big giant beds
    this is so not fair
  • The Canary Hotel, I presume, has a bird watching theme. But, for the record, I looked outside my window and didn't find anything worth binocularing. : )
  • It's always a great thing to be in a hotel that just screams luxury and comfort. Makes being away from home much more bearable.

But seriously, I really want to know what the binoculars were for.
  • The marketing value of doing things 'just a little bit better' than the your competitors is huge.

No one ever writes 'my hotel has a gym' but everyone who stays in that room will tell their friends about the binoculars and the fresh ice. Its all about creating talking points for your product.
  • Is it just me who is intrigued as to why a hotel supplies binoculars or did I miss something?
  • I live in Santa Barbara and I haven't gone inside the hotel - it sounds nice - but I've collected a couple little counts against them. A friend worked at their restaurant and didn't have a very good experience (felt it was overly stuffy), and a while ago I noticed they have a spammy Twitter account: https://twitter.com/Canary_Hotel
  • Hey Chris it's me Freddy G. I wish I was you right now because as a 15 year old geek I can't imagine anything better than staying where you are right now, which from the sounds of it is geek paradise. Anyways, I need to do an informational interview for my career exploration class so I am picking you since your job sounds really fun and I would like to get a better understanding of what it is you truly do so keep an eye out for my email within the next two days.

Definitely agree with this, Chris. This kind of praise will give support for other and keep on fueling any losing spirit to finish their race.
However, how many plugs exactly in this hotel? Are they provide all type of plugs?
