All You Have

Buddha Fortune

I’m in a bit of a bind. I’ve taken on a lot of favors. I’ve picked up some projects. And I’ve got a very rush job project that just came to contract Friday. Suddenly, I’ve gone from wondering what I’m going to do to about the next few months to wondering how I’m going to survive them. You’ve probably had that happen before too, haven’t you? You’ve gone from worried to crushed with work, and then back again, right? Because it’s what we all do, especially those of us you who own your future. It’s at those moments where you start thinking about all you have.

All You Have

On one side, all you have is yourself. You hear this a lot. Sometimes, it’s comforting. Other times, it’s what you do to counter the ouchy feeling that others can inspire in you.

On the other side, all you have is the love and support of those you’ve come to count on as your friends, and those people who nourish you. But even then, they don’t actually do the work. They can support you, but even that will be very strange and squishy and not always befitting of the situation.

So really, when you come down to that moment of execution, all you have is you.

No one writes your book for you (unless you pay them to, I guess). No one makes the hard decisions for you. No one actually helps you put your butt into the chair to do the work. That’s all you.

And yet

And yet, if you think you do it all by yourself, you’re fooling yourself. There are many people who got you to where you are now. There are many people who care for you, who love you, who support you and put a lot of energy into helping you get where you’re going. And if you doubt that, even for a moment, things go awry. Some of this might take the form of whatever spirituality or religion you believe. But some of this is real, honest, wonderful people, right here on our little blue marble.

And both matter in the equation, no matter what.

This is so applicable to me right now! We’re dealing with a family member who’s been mooching off of the family for years but doesn’t do anything to change her situation. And yet, she takes no responsibility for all the things going wrong in her life and blames the people who love her and are trying to help her. It’s to the point where everyone is fed up already. She thinks nobody is on her side, nobooy cares about her but it’s her failure to acknowledge that people have been helping her all along that pushes us away. Interesting how you said things go awry when we don’t remember those who’ve helped us. This is exacty what’s happening and we’re at a loss for what to do.

    You’re so right Chris.

Whenever I have a good day in my business, whether it’s making money from a product launch, sponsoring some new distributors or having a piece of content go viral, I always remember that without the support of my wife, it would not have happened.

Who do you think takes care of the house so I can write?  Who takes care of the finances so i can concentrate on recruiting?  Who has my back when times aren’t good?

My wife Rosemary, that’s who.   Without her, I could accomplish very little.

We never accomplish anything solely by ourselves.  There are always those silent souls in the background, without whom success and accomplishment would be unspoken words in a failed business.

Beautiful start to the day. The real, honest people who surround us in love and the best intentions are what gets me through the tough spots too.

as usual Chris, spot on, and really those of us who don’t have a supportive wife to get us out the door in the morning, really know that we are all we have, sending you strength to get it done.

We are glad that you took your time for this article. We all know how busy you are. I want to say thanks to my husband, my brother and my mother for the times when I felt  down and they were there to support me. I love you guys!

Whenever I feel that way, I imagine what the great powers in the universe are saying. “OK, so you said you were worried about not having work. I give you work, you’re too busy. You say you are tired of snow, so I make it warm, now it’s too warm. What is WRONG with you people??” It makes me smile.

I also would like to add, “Lists FTW.” Cross those bad boys out when you get ‘em done, even if it’s little stuff.

When you’re an army of one, feast or famine of work can be terrifying. Thankfully, it always sounds like you have a lot of good support around you… even if sometimes you know you have to go it alone.

I truly hate it when I expect something to go a certain way and it goes the opposite, but mainly I do like it when the change is positive – it makes me feel a whole lot better about myself and the situation. :)

So happy that you are crushed with Work although I wish there where an in between for you. I also wish that it is billable work because of many of us have work all the time to keep our businesses going but in many occasions we are not generating income.

Today I had a message from a friend that is a client. She is trying to get a project off the floor and has been sick this weekend. It really got me thinking on how many of us also have to deal with managing a small business which depends of one or two people and how we have to continue to run our business even when we are sick.

Running your own shop on your own or with few people can make it difficult when we hit these hurdles. Thankfully I have people like you and @joesorge:twitter to keep me going on those days! Thanks!

Hello Chris! One thing I absolutely love about you is that you’re the King of Transparency! Thank you for just being you and sharing with us your vulnerability.  It’s a daunting yet exhilarating thought to realize that all we have is really ourselves.  Sure we can leverage  systems and tools but ultimately, it is our relationships and our specialized knowledge that customers invest in.

I pray that your accomplish more than usual in the next few weeks and through it all, you will find the time to B-R-E-A-T-H-E and get a dose of inspiration that as you’ve been there for many of us, we are here for you, even if to send you loving prayers, energies and intention.  I absolutely agree: “There are many people who got you to where you are now. There are many
people who care for you, who love you, who support you and put a lot of
energy into helping you get where you’re going.”

You have been my absolute inspiration for blogging and you Sir have immensely helped me get to where I’m going… I may not be able to help “write your book for you, nor make decisions for you nor put your behind into a chair” but know that I am always here ready to assist and cheering you on!  Emma ;)

….so well put and spot on…hitting the nail on the head for me exactly where I am and working towards where I want to be. Support from friends and resources outside of my family, including “The Big Guy” up there, make it such that it is my responsibity to honor thier confidence in me and do what I (and nobody else can do) need to do to put my best self out there, through my business and the business of  life…..to shine, shine, shine.
    Thanks again for this.

I was just talking to someone about this yesterday.  Right now I am in the worried phase, but I know it will change on a dime!  Hope you’re well, my friend.

Chris, this was just what I needed this morning.  I have been experiencing that lack of patience feeling.  Working super hard to grow the business.  Content consumption overload as I am reading and listening to everything I can get my hands on.  And overall losing focus.  The practicality of this message brought everything in to perspective.  Thanks bro.  I helped me chill!

Related to the fact that I’m totally buried in work today, I didn’t get to dig in and comment back very much. But thank you for every comment. I read each and every one. Sorry to be lame about it. : (

    • http://rickmanelius.com Rick Manelius

If by ‘lame’ you meant “I took time for myself so that I didn’t get sick over stressing out trying to be superman” than yes… very lame of you :)

I always appreciate a comment back, but I’d rather know that you’re ok instead of connecting with us/me out of self-imposed guilt. So get back into bunker mode!  :)

Go Chris! Go Chris! I have a feeling this pace you’re experiencing is not going to be temporary. You’ve got some interesting conversations ahead for you. I find when I move to the next level in my biz, it’s a total growth experience. If I pay attention, I learn more about what I value – from how I do business to how I take care of me. Hang in there, remember to breathe – and delegate what you can!

That’s right, Chris. Like Dr. Bob I couldn’t manage without my wife to support me and to talk to. It’s been tough recently with Gloria laid up after surgery because I have had to support her as well as myself in keeping the ship on course. I appreciate her all the more. No, we are not alone.

This goes along with a common theme. I’ve been confusing laziness with busyness. It is me who puts my butt in the chair. It all depends on me. Everyday I do get in that chair though I thank God for the people I have around me and the people who have helped to get me where I am today. Great post.

I love that you wrote about this Chris.  Even though it’s all on me, I couldn’t do it without the love and support of my family. They believe in me and that’s an important part of why I park my butt in this chair every day.
