Appreciate the Wild Minds

CBreakfast with Geo

Geo Geller is a million things. He is a filmmaker. He is an art revolutionary. He is a supporter of terrifying causes. He is forever in the business of causing counterpoint, and he is also an insultant for hire. What’s the difference between a consultant and an insultant? A consultant tells you what you want to hear. An insultant tells you what you need to hear. I’ve known Geo since 2006, when I joined the traveling circus that Jeff Pulver gathers around him. He is the wild mind that sometimes squirts kerosene on Jeff’s already-fiery passions, and he is a dervish to other projects like Andy Dixon’s YouthTurns, an organization that hopes to help kids out before they get into bigger trouble. (Click the hell out of all those links above. Every one of them will open your head in new ways.)

Also in 2006, I had the strange pleasure of meeting Josh Harris. It was at a little private dinner held by Jason Calacanis in L.A. with all the leading videobloggers of the time (I was there kind of by accident, truth be told, because I was just a burgeoning typist). Josh told me in really short order that he was recovering from a serious burnout, but that he’d been one of the leading dot com guys a few times over. He then mentioned his projects (Jupiter and Pseudo), which didn’t click in my head much, though I nodded politely and pretended that I knew what they were. He then went on to describe his new idea, which was huge and revolutionary, and frankly, felt a hair crazy. That ended up falling backwards from a grand vision into Operator11, a video chat platform not unlike 12seconds.tv (soon to shutter), Seesmic (back when it was a video platform), and several more.

Flash forward to a few days ago. Kat and I watched We Live in Public (amazon affiliate link to a digital rental) and saw all the projects that Josh had been working on in his career. This documentary is mindblowing. I’ll tell you this right now: forget The Social Network (currently playing in theaters) and watch this instead. What Harris has predicted since way back in the old days of the 90s has come eerily true (albeit in different manifestations) over and over and over. ( There’s a good review of the movie here, though it might be a bit of a spoiler for the larger story.)

One thing stuck out in the film, and I wrote Jason Calacanis to tell him the same thing: I was very impressed with how Jason really stayed loyal to Josh’s wild ideas. That didn’t mean that Jason participated in everything Josh did, and I’m sure there were lots of spots where their opinions varied, but Jason knew (knows) that Josh Harris had (has) his fingers on the pulse of the Internet mind, and he studied (studies) Josh to glean some potential ideas off it.

The Geo Gellers and Josh Harrises and all the wild minds need to be heeded, to be heard, to be raised up and appreciated, to be studied and cross-referenced. Their ideas don’t fit into spreadsheets and business plans quite often, but the extrapolations are things of beauty and wildness, all at once. It’s like watching nature try to express itself in a whole new way, watching how their thoughts manifest. Sometimes nature is ugly. Sometimes it’s not efficient. Sometimes it’s not useful in its entirety, but there’s a lot to appreciate here.

Watch We Live in Public. Connect with Geo Geller. Pay attention to the wild minds. I think there’s a lot of “there” there, as Jeff Pulver used to tell me, only in ways we can’t immediately put to good use.

Geo Geller is one of my favorite people in the world. Straight-forward, thoughtful, caring and very genuine. Never thought of the term insultant, I think I might need to take lessons from Geo.

    Geo looks amazing.

    Youth link isn’t working.

Great way to start the morning, appreciating the wild.

Geo seems a pretty interesting character, definitely one to look into more.

Mind you, if your consultant tells you just what you want to hear, fire him or her and get a better one. That’s not a consultant; that’s just someone sucking ass for money.

You’ve made me consider changing my job description to an insultant! You are a rare jewel and I love reading your blogs every morning! Keep up the great work!

Got to say I was pretty bummed by Problogger’s post today saying, “if there are few comments on a blog” he cuts and runs. Doesn’t seem fair for new bloggers. Maybe Darren was just being another “insultant”–love that word–and that put it in perspective.

Then I read about Geo and friends and got some spirit back. So thanks. What a great way to start the day. Wild energy and wild minds add to the collective synergy of the universe.

I’m already an insultant (and have paid the price in business – somewhat negative and in integrity – way positive)

now I can put it on my resume with a tip of the hat to CB and Geo Geller. Deborah from Rochester

    Love the Insultant.

Interesting to hear your thoughts on We Live In Public. I keep seeing this on AppleTV and have been meaning to watch it.

    Thanks.

    Hi Chris,

Wild minds create the most world-changing ideas. They rarely conform; not for the sake of it but because they are thinking and acting from their heart.

Thanks for sharing the important reminder.

I must say that Geo really inspires me..

    The wild mind ha?

I feel like I want to say something substantive but I’m not sure what..

The heretic is the life of the party.. and I think how well a culture relates to it’s heretics probably says something of the health of that culture.. Jesus was a heretic.. how was rome in those days?

I often think the spread sheets.. the metrics.. the focus on ROI.. the whatever.. is like a substitution for direct experience.. it’s roll is like that of the church or a saint.. providing a little intercession.. cause if you had a direct relationship to the underlying mystery.. I don’t know.. some people’s heads would fry off I guess?

Which isn’t to say intercession is a bad thing.. but you don’t get the great visions that way. And so I think there’s some room here to think critically about our existential relationship to our tools.. to our system.. to the version of reality that has us captured..

I imagine.. that in the sorta Catholic sense of the term, we all have a vocation: There is a path through life which we are uniquely constituted and qualified for.. and it’s like some psycho-social developmental process of the collective via which we find our selves here or there.. that some are lead by, as black sabbath sang “the hidden voices in the dark” towards a wild mind vocation, or whatever else…

But we do live in a time of disintermediation.. a time.. in a Nietzschean-esk way.. where we find our old god’s dying..

so I wonder if.. in our collective common knowledge take on the everything, that has captured us.. what kind of obstacles this might present to the collective psycho-social developmental process of our age.

Err.. I don’t know.. that’s probably enough substance for now.. I need to go buy some pants don’t cha know.. (perhaps stone washed jeans? ;-) )

    Hey Chris,

I love it, brother. You’re really doing something important by featuring brilliant minds like Geo in your blog. I know you know that Paulo Coelho is another. I also love what you’re saying here about nature.

I actually lived in the woods (more or less) for about 6 years, and here’s how I boiled my lessons learned down in a recent blog post:

    - At every turn, there is a predator waiting. Sometimes that predator is outside of us.
    - Gratitude is a transformative attitude. It has the ability to disarm even the most tense encounters, and is the foundation of truly resilient relationships.
    - Everything sticks to patterns. There is no such thing as chaos.
    - Intelligence is more than just the thoughts in our heads. Intelligence is also strategy, intuition, beauty, flexibility. Intelligence takes many forms.
    - Humans have a role. Nature, culture, and economies will respond positively to our heartfelt attempts to regenerate them. They will also forgive our mistakes.
    - We don’t have to struggle. Everything we need is provided for us. All we have to do is to remember to give thanks.
    - The first priority is to learn to weep again – weep for the completeness of it, weep for its realness, and weep for the overwhelming fact of our aliveness.

Just wanted to share. Wishing you all, all the best!

Thanks for your insights, Chris – and thanks, Geo!

I watched “We Live in Public” a few weeks ago. Took it out from the library, through interlibrary loan. I’d agree it was mindblowing but it’s hard to compare the documentary of real people and real thoughts with Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay and Hollywood actors. Apples and oranges.

I’m mildly surprised you never heard of Jupiter before; I used to avidly follow the company’s internet reports in the late ’90s.
