Colin Wants His Kids Back

Colin Bower

It’s really hard to imagine what life is like right now for my friend and coworker, Colin Bower. His children were illegally abducted over a year ago, and transported to Egypt against Colin’s will and against the law. It’s been a year of working to get them back, and that’s far too long.

I’ve been acting as a solo dad for the last few days while my wife and son are away in Canada, and it’s been time really well spent. I’ve learned that trying to comb very long hair on an 8-year-old girl is a painful thing for both of us. I’ve learned that just because I fell asleep doesn’t mean that she did, and that she’s quite happy to watch documentary footage about the Titanic all night until I catch her hiding out in the bathroom with a little “cinema” of stuffed animals and the laptop.

Juxtapose those two things: I’m fortunate enough to be a dad to my young child, and Colin’s kids were illegally abducted and he hasn’t seen or heard from them in over a year.

There are people in the US government working to help this process along, but we need your help to keep this situation front and center. Given all the things on our government’s plate, you can imagine how important it is to keep up the voice until Colin’s kids are returned.

Please do Three Simple Things

1.) Please visit this Facebook page and send a letter to Secretary Hilary Clinton (It’s super easy to do.)
2.) Please tweet or share this link: http://bit.ly/noorramsay (which leads to the facebook page).
3.) Please keep Noor, Ramsay, and their Dad, Colin, in your thoughts and prayers.

And thank you.

Chris, Done in an instant. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must be like for Colin right now. I have a 2 year old and a newborn coming any day now and life without them around would be so hard.

Also, when you figure out the tips to brushing hair can you share them with me. I’m only 6 years from that.

Been thinking of Colin every day. Sometimes things happen to people and you just know you can’t imagine the impact of it. I don’t understand why multiple governmental figures can’t make this work out, but I will keep retweeting, tweeting, and keeping Colin in my thoughts till it all gets worked out.

This is tough. Didn’t he have to give written permission to his wife to take the Children out of the U.S.
This should be given a lot of plublicity so that spouses are aware of the risk of agreeing to let their children leave the Country with a spouse of a different culture.
This seems to happen over and over.
Needless to say I don’t expect he will reconcile with his wife.

Normally that’s the rule, but the US border and the Egyptian border plus the airline in question evidently didn’t require that.

My thoughts are with him and yes, I’ll send that letter to Hillary. As a single mom to five who has an ex-husband who travels the world, lives la vida loca and wants nothing to do with our children it actually enlightens me to hear about those who are passionate about their children (like me). It breaks my heart to hear that Colin is being kept from his children. I hope every letter of support helps him.

Is there a fund for Colin that we can contribute to. I see that he has not asked for money, but the legal fees and the travel to Egypt must take a toll. I would be interested to know. Thanks Chris.

      I’ll ask.

This is a heartbreaking story, and I have passed it along in Facebook. But it is a bit frustrating that all the effort is going through Facebook. I have many friends who just aren’t on it (or who loathe it, even). I had to do a bit of googling to find a non-Facebook link for donations.

Obviously, Facebook has great power and it makes a difference in this kind of action. But there is probably a lot of additional support to be garnered by setting up an “non-aligned” blog.

    • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

There are over 500 million users, so I think that was the thinking there.

A non-facebook blog makes sense. Maybe we’ll put up a tumblr.

Done as requested. I can’t help but sympathize with him since I can feel his pain. I am also a dad and being away with your children is as painful as being neglected by the whole world. Hope he can them back or at least have some arrangement of having some communication with them regularly.

I will help in any way possible. This is absolutely heart-breaking.

Sounds very similar to another story of a Dad who had his son kidnapped by his Mother who took him to Italy and then dropped him off in an orphanage and the Italian authorities were it making it very hard to get him back.

Both very, very sad stories. I can’t imagine what he’s been through.

    Chris
At one point in my life I was an eight year old girl with very long hair and on rare occasions my dad found himself in your position. And it was painful for both of us then but those moments make me smile today.
Thank you for drawing my attention to Colin’s situation – I’m in on writing and lobbying for support for him! And thank you for using your social capital to generate awareness about issues that are so important! It’s just one of the gazillion reasons I appreciate you and enjoy being part of your community!

Chris – You’re a good writer, really. You motivated me to take the 2 minutes from my day to do my part to help Colin and his children.

It is really tough to be a dad and to have your children so far away. But if he gets his kids back, I guess somewhere in Egypt a mom will be missing her kids. Fortunately she is not American, no need to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
