Have You Tried Google Reader Browse

February 15, 2009 · Comments

browse for stuff Have you ever noticed something on a website and immediately realized you’re not sure when it got there? I use Google Reader multiple times a day, and never saw the “browse for stuff” option. So, today, I clicked it.

Quite interesting. It did pick some really interesting recommendations, and I subscribed to a few. What I also liked was that it let me sort them into folders in-line, meaning I didn’t have to do a lot of frivolous navigating to put the feeds right where I wanted them.

you can do everything in-line and save time

Pretty useful when looking for something new that you haven’t found via other sources.

Has it been around long?

  • Funny how you use something everyday and yet miss things. I'm just starting to educate our engineers here about RSS and getting them on to Google Reader, so this will be another nice thing to point out to them.
  • Google Reader's a superb service, but like a lot of Google products, clarity in design and features could do with some work...great apps have a learning curve that moves a user along as they become more sophisticated.

I'm curious about widely adopted of aggregation tools are across various user demographics...other than the Facebook news feed, many providers (Bloglines, Google, Netvibes etc) struggle to get across the metaphors and illustrate the benefits.

Chris, you are my favorite blogger bar-none, full of consistently useful insights, engagingly expressed, and perfectly balancing authority with humility. I've been using the browser for the past several weeks. It works great. And it kind of tickles me for some strange reason that you hadn't noticed it before. It's like, I don't know, John Madden just noticing the highlighted first-down marker, or Barack Obama just noticing that you can vote absentee.
  • I never noticed it before today. I'm stll wrapping my tech head around useful ways to work with Google Reader and this is a valuable note to search for other information.

    Thanks for the FYI.
    @nakeva
  • Never even heard of that before. I will check it out and see how it works. Thanks for the info.

I, too, am on google reader a few times a day. I got turned on to it by Ed Dale during his 30 day challenge program. It's a very useful tool and I have used the browse feature. My only problem is that too many things capture my attention - lots of great stuff out there :)!
  • Chris,

I've not used the Google reader yet, but I'll poke around and have a look a little later today.

The feature you describes sounds stumble-esque. Do you think Google may make a run at that kind of interface?

    Cheers

    George
  • Before the new design, it was a little bit hidden under an option with the name "Recommendations".

That is how I found your blog ! :-)
  • I'm amongst the masses who hadn't seen it before. Now that I've used it, I'm hooked. Got some great recommendations for my reading list.

    Fantastic tip! Thank you, Chris.
  • Excellent feature - I had also never really "seen" it. (I think that's true of many things in life, technological and not.)
  • Well I just tried their bundles today they have a listing from anthropology to CRM to Zune. Isn't this same as their Discover feature in the earlier avatar?
  • Hi Chris!

I love it! Depending on what you put in your Reader subscription, it would aggregate stuff you may like. Love it!

    All the Best!

  • LOL...I just wrote "a couple years ago" when it was days...too funny. Ddddd-dorked out.
  • I saw that a couple years ago and found a couple of little gems to subscribe to. I think I might frequent it a little more!
  • I've used it forever and I've found some really great feeds. What's interesting is I find a lot of people's twitter feeds showing up there. But I'm most curious if my own feed shows up to others. Wish you could get stats on that.
  • Thank you tremendously Chris. Excellent little tool. I too have never noticed that feature. I use Google Reader throughout the day, every day - and am surprised I never noticed such a dandy link. Just subscribed myself to a few new blogs. :-)
  • I've been using it for over a year... :)
  • Chris,
Thanks a lot. You look at something a million times a day and not really see it. This browse feature is a great recommendation tool. Putting it to use, right now.
