Holiday Photo Project

Harold Making Funny Faces

Hey! Let’s do a holiday photo project! Some of you will get new cameras and videocameras for the holidays. Let’s use them!

For those of you celebrating the holidays over the next few days, let’s do this: take a snap that represents what REALLY is going on. You know what I mean. Don’t take the posed, pretty, everyone-wearing-the-same-sweater photo. Take the photo of your daughter crying because you didn’t buy her the Littlest Pet Shop Euthenasia Set, or that picture of Aunt Bernaise with her teeth out, snoring in the corner.

Post them on your blog, on Flickr, wherever it makes sense, and throw a link in the comments, or link back to this post. Whatever works.

Extra points for video.

And, if something really sparks my fancy, I’ve got four STUFFED boxes of over 25 pounds of books, comics, and other things that I’ll mail to you (US and Canada only for those). It’s not a contest, but if you wow me, I’ll be moved to share something with you.

What do you think? You in?

If you enjoyed this post, please consider leaving a comment or subscribing to the feed to have future articles delivered to your feed reader.

I hired a professional photographer to come to our house and take a family Christmas picture of the four of us in front of the fireplace. Me, my husband, the dachshund, and the cat sat on the floor and got some great pictures (the photographer is very patient and good with animals).

Toward the end, we decided to take some sweet pictures of just me and the husband. We went in for a little kiss.

Someone else decided they had to be involved as well.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpvdSYrTfyc - I was really bummed about having to go to Connecticut for Christmas, but we wound up spending the day with a lovely Swedish family who taught us a new drinking song! Talk about festive!

My 7 year old daughter is always singing around the house but very very shy if anyone stops to notice...I was so bummed to have to travel on business during her first solo in the school Christmas play. My wife took our Flip Cam on my behalf and I am so glad this was captured....our daughter was proud, my heart melted and like all parents...I think she is going to be a HUGE star. This is my 17 second memory defining Christmas 2009. We are so blessed.

My wife and I are having our first child (baby girl - @babywaldow) in March. Watching your 7 year old daughter, Zoe, sing on stage was brilliant. Get's me pumped to be a dad soon. I also think she'll be a HUGE star. Very happy for you and your wife.

    Thanks so much for sharing.

    DJ,

I can't even begin to describe the Daddy/Daughter relationship. I have a son too - he is awesome...it is different...but all good. I had a friend describe it as 'my son makes my heart soar, my daughter makes it melt.' I like that. Congrats on your first child! Its an awesomely beautiful thing!
  • all i can say is that you did a very wonderful job on your Holiday Photo project. you looks so nice and cute..
  • The annual Jones family white elephant gift exchange turned out to be a little more exciting this year...

As my brother-in-law commented, "Airfare to Utah - $300. Presents for family - $600. Aunt Amy's white elephant gift - $14.99. Lifelong therapy for traumatized niece who opened box with live Tarantula - priceless."

15 granddaughters, 4 grandsons, six daughters, three son-in-laws. The screaming continues and Katie shows no fear: http://bit.ly/6xkQLc

A better view of the rather large spider. My favorite part of this clip is Uncle Morris, the acknowledged master prankster of the group trying in vain to convince his wife that he had nothing to do with the Tarantula. In truth, he didn't. The prank was entirely the work of my dear wife, Aunt Amy - who will never live down her reputation as the "mean aunt." http://bit.ly/7z3ms7

Thanks to Jack H. for suggesting that I share these clips.

    Hey Chris, here's my submission:

They're some of the photos I took of Santa on a military base in Afghanistan this Christmas. If I had read about the holdiay project earlier I would have taken photos of Santa looking tired, overwhelmed or hungry. As it is, I think I've shown a bit of what it's like for him to visit sooo many people who are soooo happy to see him. Merry Christmas!

  • Chris, I am seriously grateful that I found you in 2009. I love the way you think, make us think, make us move and take interesting action.

My photos are loaded to facebook: http://profile.to/JudithAtkinson . I was so delighted then to read you great idea today. Sorry a tad behind - had to take photos. on Christmas day.

Photos. and videos are top of my "To Learn" list for 2010 so I will be watching and learning with keen antci.......ation.

I wonder what News Year's Eve has in store?

wisahing you and your family an extremely Happy and Successful 2010.
  • They say there are no co-incidences but honestly I took my photos. yesterday and ready your blog today. A tad behind! http://profile.to/JudithAtkinson also posted on tumblir: sizzle4health.tumblr.com .

Chris Brogan you are amazing and I just love your ideas, the way you present them and how you shake us up, wake us up and make us think.

I am truly gratful for finding you in the latter part or 2009

. Oddly enough photos. and videos are one of my major "To learn things" for 2010.

Maybe I'll find the time to write the content to build tghe business. There is so much to learn and it's electrifying.
  • You're good to me, Judith. Thanks for being here. : )

  • Chris,
I know this is selfish: what about your fans in Cork Ireland. We want to wow you too. We want to be in on the inside... Some of us are jealous of you in USA & Canada who can aspire to getting a prize from Brogan.
This post-Christmas period can be tough for many. There is so much going on, in the head, in the wider world. A little something from Chris Brogan might make a big difference to us in the struggling island.

If I won something, I'd pay the postage. I'd value it that much.

But you're a good man all the same. (Twitter @omaniblog)
  • It's a SUPER heavy box. I'll have to find something useful to send to Cork. : )
  • Hi Chris. Special way to showcase the full, the fat and the clean-up ugly! But here's a special moment that i think describes it all; dirty dishes can wait. http://www.facebook.com/#/photo.php?pid=3084172...
  • Merry Christmas to you and your family. I thought I would share some pictures that I've posted on my blog - http://bit.ly/5zyoqB

We were celebrating on Christmas Eve, drinking a few shots of great Newfoundland Screech and enjoying some family company. My two nieces were having trouble getting to sleep, excited about the coming of Santa Claus. I had my BlackBerry ready when one walked out her bedroom door, thinking she was going to see someone other than myself. The look on her face was priceless!

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from my family to yours and from all the Newfoundlanders here partying away over the holidays!
  • Hi Chris,

Merry Christmas to you! Here is a video-link to my Flickr page with my nine-month old grand-daughter playing with the gold-foil wrapping paper from her gift.

This Christmas I got what I've been wanting for awhile, a Diana F+ camera. I love it!! And because I just couldn't wait any longer, I threw some film in her and went crazy! I developed the negatives using "Caffenol", scanned them, and posted them on my blog. Take a look if you get the chance!

  • Hi Chris,

Hope this counts - I used a "second-hand" photo from a friend on Facebook to make a pair of holidy puzzles, but my thoughts about holiday traditions, family spread around the world, and how we can still share via tools like blogs help say "what is REALLY going on" for me: http://ow.ly/PCO1

  • Awesome idea. I'm sharing my holidays at Whrrl at http://whrrl.com/search?q=%23skimbacoholidays&c... and will pick a stellar photo.. hm, can it be the humongous plate of BBQ ribs I just ordered & destroyed today instead of cooking for the family..?
  • I'm in.....will try to catch a bunch of Pics and Video to go with my new Blog. Merry Christmas Chris, thanks for changing my world.
  • My 2 year old and I playing in his first snow - it's only accumulated an inch, so he got bored a little quickly.

  • I wish I had shot a video of the 45 minute meltdown my 2 year old had on the plane (because his ears hurt). But equally impressive was the jerk in front of us downing scotches, rocking back and forth with his hands covering his ears, swearing at my two-year old.

To the good people of flight 887 (minus the nimrod in row 18) I apologize.
  • The nimrod probably isn't aware that crying helps relieve the pressure. Poor guy -- flying is tough all around these days. Hope the rest of the holiday is better.

This is a fun-tastic idea! Let's see what the Dutch can come up with!

Merry Christmas from The Netherlands and until later then...!
  • Classic Chicago holiday experience:

I may have some still photos to add later ...
  • Thanks for posting this video. We didn't get downtown this year because of serial colds in the family.
  • I'm game! My 3yr old has a habit of shaking in excitement so much that it seems like he's going to have a seizure.
  • Aunt Bernaise may have her lawyer send a cease and desist if that photo finds it's way to the web. Great idea, Chris.
  • Sounds great! What a wonderful idea!
  • Here's another "cheater", from a small town on Vancouver Island. Karl (with a "K") celebrates his 75th birthday at the local pub's Sunday night Jam (and Lion's Club Meat Draw). Local tradition requires newcomers (and Karl with a "K") to join in singing "I got my mojo working.". Aside from telling the PACKED house that he loved us all, watch for the part where he takes out his teeth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNSEKhAMTuY ... at least his birthday's in December.
  • Chris, I'll do you one better. How would you like Virtual Christmas with the BenSpark.com family. I set up a site for my in-laws to watch us have Christmas, starting tonight with Christmas Dinner I'll be broadcasting live and tweeting and posting photos at http://holidaybenspark.blogspot.com/ Drop by for a visit.
  • Oh and that holiday blog directly came out of my first and soon to be published second post for Dad-O-Matic. The first post outlines the idea and the second post details how to set up a Virtual Christmas site for anyone who wants to do it too.
  • We did that when we lived in WI and all the relatives were in VA. Only back then (10 yrs ago) there wasn't much available and the webcam sucked!!! But we made it work. We always felt like we got to spend Christmas together and all the grandparents never missed seeing the kids open all the presents.
  • That is great Michele. This experiment has been a little mixed. The wireless Eye-Fi card is temperamental. However this morning I recorded Eva opening presents with ustream so that my wife's parents could watch it all later. It wasn't live but they still don't miss out on the action. We'll see what today brings.
  • Hmmm...my son with Santa or my daughter dancing to Jingle Bells? Too tough to decide, how about both...http://twitpic.com/uz3zk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lycQ9OCByDE
  • I'm in. Sounds like a great idea.
  • This might be cheating, because it happened last week. But it sure does capture the spirit of the season! 19 Seconds of Pure Joy: http://bit.ly/6VRXJf
  • Awesome!
