Kirtsy Back in Business

May 12, 2008 · Comments

kirtsy Kirtsy is the new name for Sk*rt, who skirted into waters that weren’t as comfy for a moment there. It’s a pretty cool site. Mix the wisdom of the crowds with 22 engaged and passionate editors and you get a fabulous hybrid of social news meets curated content.

Kirtsy is a site where women point out the cool stuff. Is that simple enough? There’s obviously a lot more at play here, but after looking around the site, I think you’ll figure it out pretty quickly, as well, and so I won’t dig in too deeply.

What I will say, however, is that Kirtsy has some neat features (the mix of editing and voting, for one), a nice design, and has a lot to offer women looking for information on a whole host of subjects, including family, design, travel, mind and body, and more.

Give Kirtsy a look-see, and let me know what you think-see.

  • that layout, for whatever reason, clutters the crap out of me. it's like snippet hell! i also couldn't find a way to subscribe to a section, which right now seems like the only way to digest the content without being overwhelmed by everything all over the place.
  • It's like Digg, though. Kinda/sorta. Right? I get your point, but I just figured it was a more-column digg.
  • Female digg?

    I'm on it... LOL!

    ;-)
  • I'm still getting used to saying Kirtsy It - instead of Skirt It (or maybe it should be Kirtsy Me?)...but I'm really impressed by these ladies ;) And not just cause they are my friends.

They really took the high road here - and trust me - it wasn't easy to do ;)
  • The new name and logo are great! They also did a fantastic job of tapping into their community for help with the name change. After all, a lot of the women putting up content are writers, independent consultants, marketing folks and the like.
  • @Amanda - there is a way apparently to subscribe to sections, though it isn't a simple "click the button" method yet. What you do is concatenate the string "category=" followed by the section name to their RSS feed URL. An example using the "Internet & Technology" category is given below:

    http://kirtsy.com/rss.php?category=Internet_Tec...

I will suggest to the fine folks there that they make sure and attach those URLs to the appropriate buttons on each of the section pages (and also on their home page.)

  • On the style and the branding of the site it kind of déja vue and clutter. "Less is more lady.." It remind me of a mixture of http://www.designspongeonline.com and http://mightygoods.com but a rush job on the layout.

Even if they might have interesting information.

    It hurt my eyes.

    Volia mon avis....
  • i am a fan of them already, but the redesign helped alot

the re naming wasnt all that necessary, but the editors picks and the better content quality make the site way more useful

    way to go gals!

Just have to comment I was very frustrated to see this site. Yes, this is a 'woman digg', technically, but content wise it's Cosmopolitan meets House&Garden serving as a 'woman's version' of what's going on in the world and is interesting to know.

    First impression:
The top ad on the homepage - seemingly un-aligned with anything else so it manages to be the very first thing that catches the eye on the site - is for Laser Hair Removal Machines. Says something about the target audience interests?

Ok, I kirtsy around a bit.

    Homepage:
Among the most prominent popular links I register 'Hilarious but Delicious Meatloaf Cupcakes with Potato Frosting' and 'A Totally Swoon Worthy Cake'.

    Checking out some sections:
Without too much enthusiasm I check out the section Politics, World and Business and among the first four links are 'Hubby tries to flog wife on eBay' and 'These bad ass gardeners rock'. Hmmm...

I scan the Arts & Entertainment section (could be anything and rarely has nothing much of the arts, I do realise) and here I find the top notch links:

    'Kerry Katona Gives Birth!'
    'Ashlee is pregnant!'

Ok, I leave Kirtsy already there, having not found two links I want to follow, and maybe I'm a sourpuss tonight, and I have already babbled on too much (I'm a woman after all...)

But it does make me think that I would love to find a site/tool written, edited, twittered, digg'ed, by and for women, which could potentially have some thought-provoking insights and comments traffic on *relevant* world/business/tech/arts/media events. Just a thought.

Does anybody know of anything, any recommendations? Is it even relevant, do we need a women's edition? I always question it, then I turn it around and question it from the other side. Any comments?
  • Yes, pretty cool except the stories rarely leave the up and coming. I checked on my stories several times and even with 10 or so clicks they never go anywhere. I guess you have to be friends with them to have a story read.
    total baloney!
