New Travel Site – Man on the Go

Some of you know I travel often. After thinking about it a while, I realized that I had lots of information to share with people about gear, hotels, restaurants, venues, and more. So, with that in mind, I’m soft launching Man on the Go, a travel site covering reviews of products, places, and experiences (mostly with the business traveler in mind).

Man on the Go

There are many reasons why I’m launching this. I’m using it as a teaching project, to show people how to build sites to help them achieve escape velocity. I’ll be building the results into a new course I’ll be launching shortly, so that you can see my failures and successes as they progress. How can I talk about it without doing it.

Another reason is that I am building out the media capabilities of my new company. It won’t just be a “Chris Brogan” project, but rather, a project that my new company maintains. Because my new company focuses on media and education, this is a great project to use to flesh out those experiences.

Finally, it’s a way to make use of all the travel material I seem to do. I’m on the road a lot. Why not make some value out of it by sharing what works for me and what doesn’t? As time goes on, you’ll see more hotel tours, more interviews with restauranteurs, more travel tips and ideas, and whatever else evolves.

The Design

The site was designed by the team at 9seeds. John Hawkins and I had a beer or two in Las Vegas, and I knew immediately that I wanted to work with his team. They don’t just do WordPress work; they do all kinds of back end PHP design. They’re not artists, which is why I hired someone for logo design.

The logo was designed by Craig Lee, who I met over at 99designs.com. I liked how he interpreted my idea, and I think this is a great iteration of his work. I have two other variant logos, but will keep this one for a while.

The theme is called Press75 Video Elements, a premium theme dedicated to video. It’s been weird using a non-Thesis theme (as I’ve been using Thesis for quite a while), but I’m getting used to it, and I love how it presents video.

Stop By and Visit

If you’re into business travel, take a glance at Man on the Go and let me know what you think. And if not, keep your eyes peeled for the other related announcements.

Good luck on the new project, Chris. Travel review/advice field is pretty full so it will be interesting to see if you can make any headway there aside from people here following you over.

I get that part of it is a teaching/learning experience and from that aspect it doesn't need to be a commercial success to be successful. Just saying, it's crowded over there.

  • http://nathanhangen.com/blog Nathan Hangen

I think it's awesome. Love the design, logo, idea, and execution.

Wow, that's a great idea, it seems that we are going to enjoy reading some nice stories from Man on the Go!

Thanks for the explanation Chris – I was wondering where you were going with this concept. I'll be paying attention and trying a few things myself!

Chris…! I feel like I'm on MY site at ManOnTheGo.com. The background color is almost identical.

Great design, even outside of Thesis. I think JulianSmith.tv uses that same theme. I'm not a travel dude but this is a great, exciting idea!

The color palette reminds me of my mom's Vega from the '80s. I am thankful there's no maroon plaid detailing. Is it going to be all you all the time? Not that I dislike that but I am curious if there will be other vloggers involved.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

There will be other people contributing. I don't have enough time to be everywhere. : )

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

You're right about it being crowded, but where I might differ is that I have all the blogger relations skills to land better relationships and/or to move more product for the sponsors. From the consuming side, I'll have to make it more entertaining for my audience, but from the sales side, I've got some wins already. : )

  • http://johnhaydon.com John Haydon

Chris – I wonder if your escape velocity teachings will include a chapter on “How Becoming A New York Times Best-Selling Author Enables Escape Velocity”? :-D

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

An interesting question. Directly, meaning, from the money off the book, not much. But getting me more speaking gigs, and more lucrative ones, definitely. Beyond that, it's something I think of as part of the story, but not an integral one. Meaning, I had a big audience before the book. I didn't get much in the way of a new audience after the book.

It's giving me SOME advantages, but not a ton.

Besides, I can't teach how to become a NYT bestselling author, so I have to show you the other things I know how to do . : )

Congratulations on the new site. I think it is a brilliant idea.

Looks interesting. I will have to point Jason to the new site since he does much more business travel than I do.

As a fellow man on the go, I'm glad to see this site, Chris. I'm sure I'll be able to relate. Maybe contribute, even.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

That sounds like fun. : ) Snap some video, Fordboy. : )

  • David Siteman Garland

Fantastic, Chris. Especially love the use of video. Is the focus of the site going to continue to be video based?

Is the site planning on monetizing? Is it just the ads or something more? (You know me…have to ask those questions ;)

  • http://twitter.com/ShanghaiTWTR ShanghaiTWTR

i think remove the first man running silhouette from the logo to make it cleaner.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

So, most of these answers go into a lot more depth at http://thirdtribemarketing.com , but here's your simpler answers:

    1.) All video.
    2.) Affiliate marketing plus sponsorships
    3.) Something more. : )

  • http://ItsDifferent4girls.com/blog Linda Sherman

Thank you for sharing this monetization journey with us Chris – with no qualms to show us from the very start. As I read it: Google analytics hasn't been added yet. The title tag hasn't been optimized yet. We will get to see the site take shape. I saw the site first from your Facebook message and was surprised that you didn't use Thesis. It's useful that you explained why here. Glad you stuck with Disqus for comments. Thanks again for the ride.

    Chris,

Great review, and excited by your new site.

Question: How is this backpack at fitting under the seat in front of you on a plane? That is one concern I have. Seems like after stuffing all that stuff in there… it may have to go in the overhead?

Have you tried it on on a plane yet?

    Thanks.

  • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

Great question! I have put it under the seat in front of me. And I'm very tall, so I can even get my legs in there.

Greetings from another man on the go. Looks great – I'm checking it out from Hong Kong airport.

  • John Rosa

Web site looks great, love the idea. Layout looks good and already picked up good tips on the packing for trips (wish I knew these tips and tricks when I travelled everyday back in the 80's and 90's, better then the ones I knew about making clothes come out wrinkle free). Great Job Chris and good luck with it.
Still trying to figure out difference between the WordPress and Video Press formats. I get the functional part, just not sure why you couldn't do it in WordPress alone.

There are many places online where people can find info regarding their vacation destination. Too bad the financial crisis has cut the travel appetite of most people. Leisure ain't fun anymore as it costs a lot to see the places we always wanted to see. Perhaps after the crisis passes and the salaries get back to normal we will travel again and enjoy the services of Man on the Go.

Chris, you’ve really got me thinking about affiliate marketing, and I’m going back and rereading your thoughtful posts about why you do it and what you feel it brings to your community. One thing I wish I could see in the interface above is a clear link to your own review of the product — did you post a stand-alone review of each of these products to link to?
