Two Books to Check Out

I’ve been behind in doing video book reviews lately. Here are two great books worth checking out. The first is No Bullshit Social Media: The All-Business, No-Hype Guide to Social Media Marketing (amazon affiliate link) by Jason Falls and Erik Deckers, which reads about exactly as the title would have you believe. It’s a great book for both convincing the boss and then digging in to do the work. The second book is Smart Business, Social Business: A Playbook for Social Media in Your Organization (amazon aff link) by Michael Brito, which is much more a book for someone pushing social media into an organization (medium to larger sized business). Both books are very useful to determining some next steps and taking action. Both do a good job of painting a landscape and then giving you a sense of what to do next. Here’s a video review:

Chris – I enjoy and learn from your blog a lot. I have never commented before, but I will say that your post was distracting for one reason. I’ve never seen you in a coat and tie.  Around our office, you’d be asked if you had an interview.

    Keep up the great work!

Hah! I totally get that. And I’d had a meeting, for sure. :)

I saw “No Bullshit” yesterday and thought, “Man, I’m not remembering seeing this style of business book with a cuss word so prominent in the title. I wonder if Dan Kennedy’s gonna finally stop just using “No B.S.” and just let what he’s really been saying for years stand proud on the cover, free from PC neutering.

No B.S. has a ring to it but I believe “No Bullshit” makes a firmer impression on the intention of the book. Be interesting to see what happens.

Thank you Chris for reviewing these books and helping me distinguish between which would be best for me to read first.

The business book cuss word barrier was broken the year before with “The No Asshole Rule.”

        Chris –
Depending on what company you work for that may or may not be the case. I know several companies that would not really welcome book with a cuss word sitting on your book self at the office.

Being that most of my books are on the Kindle now I guess I don’t have to worry about it. I was surprised to see that you had printed copies of the books. I am guessing they were review copies? Do you think review copies will be sent out digitally any time soon?

Can’t wait to get Brito’s book.

Thanks for the recommendations, Chris.  I picked up Brito’s book and look forward to tearing through it.  It’s great to see a book on social media that is geared more toward big business.

No Bullshit… by Jason Falls and Erik Deckers is an amusing read. I find the tone it is written in is entertaining the only problem I see with this book is that it is written for people that don’t feel like social media is needed for their business. You can drag a horse to water but do you actually think you are going to get them to read a book?

I think the people that will actually read this book are already advocates and therefore this book preaches to the choir. Again I enjoyed the book and personally learned a few things but I wonder if it is really going to convert a non-believer.

I would use some of the concepts and quotes for corporate PowerPoint presentations but I honestly can’t because of the word “Bullshit” in the title. Listing that title as a  “source” just wouldn’t be a good idea.

On the other hand Smart Business, Social Business has a lot of great information that I can actually use in my day job. I plan on pulling lots of information from this book for presentations and internal communications over the next year.

I saw Jason Falls when he came through St. Louis. Super-nice guy. He spent a great deal of time talking one on one with me about book publishing. He was very generous with his time
