Why Commute

Every time I get back in my car to navigate Boston area traffic, I realize why I’ve built the life I have. I worked long and hard on achieving my escape velocity, and it’s moments like what’s below that get me thinking.

Contrary to your fears, I’m not really going to die in moments like this.

People always ask which camera I used to shoot my video. I use the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (that’s a review of the camera).

Good thing you weren't going the other way.. it looks like it is stopped. The great thing about Boston is there is at least trains. That is the only thing I don't love about Charlotte, NC. I am a big public transportation advocate and traffic jams as well as environment are the reasons for my advocacy. Your video is so deep and I think we all have self talk that say these same words. Why and how to free some of our precious time up. BTW..great multi-tasking. That is not considered illegal is it? Shooting a video while driving is not quite texting??

Not looking forward to having to do this again in the fall (live in NH and teach in Cambridge) and constantly looking for ways to work closer to home, but wondering if there is something to be said for maximizing time spent commuting, either by listening to podcasts/audiobooks (enriching the brain), by taking handsfree calls, or something else. Of course, you're right that the ultimate goal should be to eliminate the commute altogether, but I wonder if there are ways to make the commute more productive in the meantime.

Great post. You've got me thinking, as always.

Hi Chris! Awww… So happy I am NOT in that commute anymore either. I knew from the day I started working I would never enjoy nor work in any type of career that required the 9 to 5 Grind and Commute! (Of course didn't know yet that I had the option of Entrepreneurship, which is my Life and Career!) But I did have the deep rooted feeling that there was a better way!

Good thing I followed that feeling because it has opened so many wonderful doors and opportunities to a life that so many others do not realize is there at their hands reach!

What a great message and video! And so happy I am not one of those people commuting!

Good one Chris. I made that “shift” 8 years ago when I moved back to Boston (Wellesley) in 2001 after 25 years in NYC commuting in and around North Jersey and one 8 year stint from North Jersey to White Plains. Once you pick where to live followed by work (self-employed), everything falls into place so much more sanely and humanely. Only wish i did it when i was your age. Now I live on the water (Stratford, CT) with only the occasional drive to NYC or Boston, but always when that godawful traffic is going the other way :)

Chris, just stumbled upon your blog. So glad to see a fellow New Englander navigating the ins and outs of Boston traffic! I commute each day from RI to Boston up Routes 24 and 93. While I leave early in both the morning and afternoon to try and beat the traffic, it's still a 1.5 to 2 hour commute each way. Not optimal, but for now, it enables me to tick off some of the items on my “deep living” to-do list, while I work towards making that transition into the world of self-employment.

That said, I agree with your deeper sentiments completely. I look around at all those people (and most just have one person in a car — could carpooling lessen the crappy ride?) and just wonder how different the world could be if we all were doing what we really wanted to do. Sad, but motivating nonetheless to change personally.

Thanks for the vid. Be well.

We may not pay a lot of money for gas like they do in Europe and other countries, but we sure pay a lot in time and frustration for it. I guess the laws of economics will catch up to us one way or another.

Help me understand how that camera is operated in your moving vehicle. Are you manually turning it 180 degrees to go back and forth? How is that not as dangerous as texting while driving?

Commuting helps you communicate with the people around you even if its just a stare.
