Your Blog as Breakfast

Omelette a la Jeb

What’s your go-to breakfast? Cholesterol be damned (until the tests come back), I have to say that the egg is pretty much the best and most ideal type of protein your body could ask for (and if you’re vegan, don’t fight with me. It’s okay). I like two eggs over medium with some baked beans or fruit. I like the vegetable-laden omelette (hold the cheese). My favorite food is leftovers, so I love fritatta, too.

I serve up a blog post every day. It’s breakfast. It’s an idea to get you going, to get you thinking, to give you something to chew on. I try to keep it fresh, to keep it full of good ingredients, to give you a story to go with your meal. I try to deliver good service. And I try to do it promptly and reliably.

There’s something to be said for all those things: breakfast, good service, prompt, reliable, daily.

What Are You Serving Your Audience?

Is it junk food? Is it warmed up stuff from a carton from last night? Is it someone else’s food on a new plate?

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they say, and I agree with them. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a queen, and dinner like a pauper, they say.

What’s for breakfast?

Let’s see, this morning it was a bagel with cream cheese, a cup of Folgers, a few helpings of Google Reader, a Tweet or two on the side, and for dessert? A helping or two of some blog posts, website updates, emails and phone calls.

    Yumm…

I’m making eggs as I read this. Boiling some tea as I’m trying to get off the 100% coffee kick.

Like my blog, i serve up some good hearty eggs/content. Like the egg, you can get it anywhere. Sometimes its just like every one elses – sometimes I scramble them and add salsa.

    Now serving!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. = Blogging first thing in the morning is important, it sets you up for the day.

It is imperative that you have breakfast every day, your body expects it. = Blogging needs to be consistent, your readers expect it and need to digest your posts on a consistent basis.

Finally variety is important- if you have bacon every day you will get sick of it = Blogging with a little variety is nice.

    Yummy in my Tummy.

    • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

You’ve got it, sir. You’re right on the same wave.

  • http://www.parmfarm.com Amy

One thing about people’s breakfasts that I’d be willing to bet on is that they are routine. In other words, people tend to have the same thing almost every morning. For me, it’s a McDonald’s biscuit and Diet Coke. (that’s right. and I’m proud of it!) So, in that same way, blogging should serve up something people can predict, something they can count on, look forward to and enjoy. When I see a post from CB, I can bet it’s going to be satisfying in that same way. (okay…maybe not quite as good as the biscuit, but close). It’s not ALWAYS hot, fresh or perfect…but it is always tasty enough to keep me coming back for more.

  • http://www.kherize5.com Suzanne Vara

Ok please keep this between you and me … I eat half a salami sammy for breakfast (generally around 10pst so close to lunch). As you cringe, I am up late so my meals are kinda different (justifying). I also eat a salami sammy at lunch which is around 2pm PST but I melt my moz cheese (sooo yummy) and sometimes add a piece of bologna or turkey.

Ok that is not what this post is about. What am I serving up? Well a bit of me for people that read and return. You get such insight into this mind that sometimes cannot speak/write as fast as the mind goes or to all the different places it goes when writing a post.

I will never be a denver omlette nor will I will ever be a taylor ham egg and cheese on a bagel but I will be that cold pizza the next day that is sitting on the stove in the box that you look at and stop and take a bite of and savor every single bit of.

    • http://chrisbrogan.com Chris Brogan

Your sleep cycle is different than most humans. Don’t let anyone put you in a box.

And I would eat breakfast any time of day. Like, you know, eggs and stuff.

      • http://www.kherize5.com Suzanne Vara

I will admit my sleep cycle is very different and that will be changing over the next few weeks/months. I sort of binge sleep. I get combined a lot of sleep but it is split so I sleep here, then there and then a bit more again.

When I wrote this, I did not consider being in box but reading what you said, I did put myself into a box. Yikes.

    • http://raulcolon.net Raul Colon

I agree with Chris… You can eat anything at any time of day! Just like posts shared by Chris I do think you serve a good platter! I really enjoy reading your blog and learning from you and Chris.

        Raul

Thanks my friend. I appreciate that. I have always been a lunch eater. I can eat a sammy for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I know that breakfast is important to start the day with but I would also like to think that people come here to start their day and as they digest all that Chris says, they sometimes come on over to me to cheat a lil bit on what they generally “eat.”

        • http://raulcolon.net Raul Colon

I would not call it cheating… LOL but your comments always bring a smile or a good laugh.

Sandwiches are one of the best foods in the morning. I don’t know why there’s a stigma for them, they typically have great carbs (wheat bread) and protein from lean meat, along with any veggies you put on one.

Seriously, I loved having a toasted ham sandwich with tomato and provolone for breakfast every so often.

      • http://www.kherize5.com Suzanne Vara

        Jonathan

Wheat bread always! I get my carbs early to burn them off during the day. Toasted sammies are killer good. That is actually how I started eating them for breakfast. My son was days old and not sleeping nor that first week eating much I found a sammy to be my comfort go to food. 5 years later, it still is.

I do like to have some provolone on my sammys. A nice cheese that melts just right and blends well with many meats. Here is a toast to you (sorry I had to go there).

    • http://www.kaplancopy.com/blog Jodi Kaplan

My mom’s favorite breakfast is a meatloaf sandwich on a roll.

You are deep, rich fudge, my darling :)

      • http://www.kherize5.com Suzanne Vara

        Margie

Deep fudge – hmh. Can I be peanut m n m’s? LOVE THEM. I was more thinking along the lines of that guilty food where we know we should be eating this but oh man eating that is so awesome. Guilty pleasure? Maybe that is just me cheating on my sammys and having that cold pizza in the morning?
        o
I think my point was (as I was entering the last minutes of being awake) that I know I am not how many start their day as they come here first (and should) for that good, rich, feeding the mind breakfast but I am there like that cold pizza that you feel calling you, you want to stray from the “norm” and go there but sometimes waiting a few hours is better.

What guilty pleasure are you my dear?

        • http://www.margieclayman.com Marjorie Clayman

Oh, I see. Well, let’s see. If Mr. Brogan is your nice start to the day, what am I?

          Umm…

I think I’m probably at the Dark Chex Mix stage of blogging. If you’re not careful, you might end up ingesting my whole blog site. More than likely, however, you’re gonna sift through all of the semi-healthy chocolaty chex squares so that you can find those delicious mini M&Ms.

Uh, I’m not saying that’s how *I* eat Dark Chex Mix. I don’t even touch the stuff. No idea what it is. Who are you!?!?

As I read this someone else is making breakfast for me. I try to share things on my blog to create awareness of various subjects and share information that was useful to me and to everyone. Today I think I served some dessert for breakfast since I wrote a fun post.

Is having dessert for breakfast ok?

The other thing that breakfast has in common with reading certain blogs is that when you skip it, you’re sorry later on in the morning.

Ok, so let’s say every morning my day starts with “you” for breakfast. Quick, nutricious…get’s the juices going (might lose a little time thinking about a comment to leave here). But if you are breakfast what should we call: Escape Velocity, Man on the Go, New Marketing Labs Blog, American Express Open Forum, Mom Pop POW, The Pulse Network…? Mid-morning snacks?

Well…it is now 7:49AM MST and I need to get up from the breakfast table and get back to work.
    See you tomorrow.

I like a little yogurt top with some fresh berries and a bowl of oatmeal. So it has some colour, some sweetness and of course some substance. Makes a good recipe for a post as well don’t you think? Thanks for sharing, creative way of looking at what your are serving up.

I serve grits. But I’ve discovered that what most folks want are some fricking eggs. And I neither want to nor can serve the best eggs. So I’m working to be the best grits breakfast option available to grits lovers. I’m also coming to grips with the fact that the universe of grits lovers is far far smaller (and geographically limited) than the one for egg lovers. And that’s okay.

Very insightful post. Thank you, Chris. For the record, I love me some scrambled eggs!

    • http://www.margieclayman.com Marjorie Clayman

Oh, I’ll bet you’re selling yourself short.

Also, don’t forget, grits go really well with lots of things – they don’t have to stand alone by themselves!

    Hi Chris,

“Breakfast is the most important meal of the day” is one of classic urban myths. Paul and Patricia Bragg, two of the most well-respected nutritionists around emphasize that breakfast should be the lightest meal of the day, and that a bigger lunch and nutritious snacks are the key to best health. But, I actually sort of agree with you here, in that I LOVE breakfast food items: eggs, sausage, toast, French Toast, coffee, and lots of CEREAL!!

OK, but this isn’t really about that, is it? ;-)

Yes, it’s great fun and an education to boot reading your blog posts everyday (well, almost) and digesting the information as I navigate the vagaries and wonders of the day. I appreciate the daily nature, the promptness, the reliability, and the high quality above all, for sure!

Personally, I prefer blogging later in the day though, as it gives me the chance to use thoughts and content that I’ve gathered throughout the day in my own content. Whatever works, though, as Larry David via Woody Allen put it!

    All the best,

    Peter

    • http://www.margieclayman.com Marjorie Clayman

I would bet you could find a nutritionist who would argue for each meal of the day. We should create a television show where they would all fight each other.

I understand your comparison of Blog with Breakfast but I got an immediate question without digging deeper on this comparison: Even if we try multiple mixes with our Breakfast recipes, it will be possible to some extent to have unique food and what about later? ;)

Anyways, I felt surprised when I read that you blog everyday just as how you take interesting diet in breakfast! That’s inspiring me. :)

  • http://www.margieclayman.com Marjorie Clayman

    Blogging as breakfast. Hmmmm…

I’ll tell you what I don’t want to be serving – Fiber One.

I think, if I had my druthers, my blog would be either a nice bowl of maple brown sugar oatmeal (for the Winter) or a nice little concoction of a parfait kind of thing for the Summer. Just cozy. Or refreshed. In a kind of “hmm!” kind of way.

Yes, I’m the “hmm” chick. Don’t aim too high, Margie, don’t aim too high.

    I’m hungry.

A sincere thank you for all your work, you have contributed much to our business, as well as who we are as people! Your writing propels us forward as it drives us towards excellence. We are in the hospitality industry so here is our take on Breakfast and food!

    Thanks Again… Gary

Breaking the fast! Starting the day correct, fresh fruit, an hour or two later add complex carbs, lean protein & veggies next, increase consumption toward two PM then reduce as the day ends. Certainly the nutritional factor is prevalent though sometimes… You just have to go for it! Breakfast is a lost art in our busy world, we no longer have the time to sit leisurely, not even on the weekends, read the paper and discuss the world.

    Why we cook…
As cooks we accept the responsibility to nourish the body, mind and soul. Whether preparing family dinner for the holidays, a cocktail party for friends, a clam bake on the beach or a bbq by the pool, food is the delight that draws us all together. We must purvey the best product, prepare and cook to thrill the senses! Appearance, aroma, taste and texture are of paramount importance. The table setting, décor, music & flowers must enchant our dinner companions. Food so simple & perfect it reaches for the stars, or the renaissance of a very special “culinary moment” so long forgotten!

All in all we cook to amuse, we cook for the smiles!

  • http://twitter.com/jcorbelli Joshua Corbelli

As a guy who loves his food (nachos will be the death of me), I tend to agree here. First thing on my morning agenda, even before emails, is checking blogs and the happenings of the community. If I’m not yet cognizant enough to pass along a thoughful message to my peeps, at least I can get inspired by others. Happy breakfasting!
